DeKok slowly peels away layers of pain, heartache, and deception to reveal the true heartbeats of her characters, making Between the Lies nail-biting suspense with heart and soul. --Author of the bestselling Fredrickson Winery Novels, Barbara Ellen Brink

From the Author

A note from Joy:

When I started writing Between the Lies, I didn't know it would be a sesries and when I realized it was, I didn't have any idea what to call the series. I was leaning toward "The Olivia Morgan Series." Yeah. I know.

While talking to a potential reader about Between the Lies she said, "This story sounds like a murder mystery with a boatload of suspense." She was right. As important as that is to the story it's also full of flawed, strong, beautiful, courageous women. Including Olivia Morgan the often unlikeable, messed up, main character.

This is the line that I didn't know I was going to write, but that made all the difference. . .

"This time when I looked into the mirror, I saw three determined women. The south might be full of steel magnolias, but that night, three northern lights touched the hearts and checkbooks of some of Minnesota's wealthiest citizens."

The title came near the end of the book because I guess I wasn't ready for it before then. That's the way it is sometimes for writers. We don't know some stuff until we get there.

More About the Author

I love words, and enjoy reading them as much as I do writing. My journey into both began when I was four and taught myself how to read. Somehow, I'd noticed the white space between the words she read and realized that's how to know where one word ended and another started. I listened to her say the words as I looked at each one. One day, I just "got" it. When she found me reading to my dolls and stuffed animals, she thought I'd memorized the stories, but handed me a new book and I could read most of it on my own.

That's when I started dreaming about putting my own words on the pages.

Later, I fell in love with libraries, paper, pencils, and pens. With my small weekly allowance (for cleaning my room or helping dust) I'd visit Ben Franklin or Woolworths, and buy a new tablet, notebook, or pencil. I remember the day when I was allowed to buy a set of Bic ball point pens - oh my goodness! I had blue, black, red, and green to choose from and contained ink - a really big deal to me. It was like graduation day.

Over time, the dream to write because I loved the words meshed with an equally important component: writing FOR others - to entertain and encourage; to touch and maybe even teach.

It's the writing FOR that gets me past all the excuses, fears, and distractions. The love of words is my life dance - they lead, and I follow.

Very interesting characters in this story! The author did a good job of portraying bad characters that had touches of decency in them and good characters that showed their flaws as well. Very believable characters. It deals with a difficult subject, one that needs to be addressed. I would have to say that I would not want a teenage daughter to read this but I certainly enjoyed the book. I liked the that the leading character had art as a part of her life. Well handled subject of lives traumatized by child abuse and rape. I will look forward to the next of the series.

"Rain Dance" was the first Joy DeKok book I read and I was an immediate fan. The story was well told and powerful. I was anxious to read this new release, "Between the Lies."

Confession up front: my favorite genre of books is Christian contemporary fiction - chick-lit all the way; but the complex story told in this book sucked me in after the first couple of chapters.

The first night I started reading "Between the Lies", I had difficulty falling asleep - Olivia's story disturbed me. Day two of reading, Olivia's story was intriguing and there were so many facets to her personality. Not a character I would typically be drawn to, I became Olivia's cheerleader as her story unfolded. Day three of reading, I want to know the people on this journey with Olivia - the masks begin to fall, the lies are revealed and danger is ever present. As I read, I look for clues to solve the mystery and try to identify the murderer. I then find myself intentionally putting aside other responsibilities in order to finish this book - and I understand that such a compelling and, indeed, a riveting, story has captured me.

I highly recommend this book - even to the reader who prefers romance and a light-hearted story. Joy DeKok tells the story in a way that you feel as if you know the characters. Her ability to intertwine creativity and art into the storyline gave additional depth to the story. As anxious as I was to finish this book, I was disappointed that it was over. I wanted more.

In Between the Lies, Joy DeKok has created the first in what I'm sure will prove to be a masterful suspense series. For years Olivia Morgan has been the mistress of a cruel and enigmatic man, until the night everything changes. In one fell swoop Olivia loses her "kept" status, her self respect, and her job as an art teacher at a prestigious prep school.

But all that pales when she literally stumbles across a badly scarred man who's been brutally stabbed. Olivia is stunned to find the victim was an active FBI agent. She's even more stunned when she becomes a person of interest in his murder.

Between the Lies is rich on multiple levels: the intricate plot has enough twists and sudden reveals to please the most demanding mystery fan, the settings ring true, and the characters are limned with a fine and discerning eye. Olivia Morgan is a crackerjack heroine, cursed with a nightmare childhood but charged with a determined grit that will see her through this.

She hopes.

I give Between the Lies my very highest recommendation. Kudos!

Joy DeKok's new mystery is one of those books that haunted me from page one. Meaning, when I wasn't reading, the story kept drawing me back, making me wish I could set everything else aside and just finish it! I loved that Olivia wasn't the usual stereotypical heroine. In fact, most of us would be appalled at her secret life. Yet, as the story unfolds and her life begins to unravel and secrets come out of the closet (literally), you can't help but wish for her to find her way. The twist and turns of the intricate plot line made for a fascinating story. I'm so thrilled this is book one of a series and look forward to reading more about these colorful characters. I'd rate BETWEEN THE LIES right up there with titles by two of my favorite authors, Chris Fabry and Creston Mapes. Well done, Joy DeKok!

Starts out ok but has more police than the New York police department who run around as if they are in a Keystone. Kops comedy. A ridiculous story that stretches the imagination.

Ugh. You are supposed to like the lead character - a doormat of the first caliber. Mistress to a rich man, living off his wife's wealth and totally subsuming her humanity to said cheater. Yes, I am sorry for you that your daughter by the creep died, but the whole story was twisted beyond belief, and I couldn't find anything at all to like about the lead character - or anyone else who surrounded her. It's a shame... it could have been so much better - the potential for a good storyline was there, with some really tough issues to be addressed, but it simply didn't work.

Empathize with Olivia Morgan of Between the Lies as she grieves her little daughter, dead from cancer. But Olivia has been a “kept woman”—a mistress—of a wealthy married man for years. Just when she thinks he is about to leave his wife, the unthinkable happens and he dumps her instead. But that’s not the most alarming part of the story. Try to keep up with the intrigue as Olivia is implicated in several murders, humiliated by her lover’s wife, and serves as confidante for his family to reveal their secrets. Will she go to prison for the crimes? Or will she be declared righteous, protected and redeemed? A mystery man stalks her throughout the story, leaving roses behind, seemingly coming and going through the very walls of her provided apartment. What will she do when forced to move out, since her lover no longer supports her? All these questions are answered in the pages of Between the Lies by Joy DeKok.
