3.0 out of 5 stars Bland and pretty singing applied to mortal questions April 23, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Among some lieder specialists, the German lyric tenor Christoph Pregardien is held i highest regard. I have never been more than moderately enthusiastic. At 54, his voice remains pleasant and youthful sounding; it's the kind best suited for Bach and the lighter Mozart roles. In lieder, to which Pregardien is clearly dedicated, I find him bland, and even when he rises to some intensity, the interpretations are foursquare and lacking in personality.

Here we get a recital based on a theme -- "between life and death" -- that sounds imaginative but risks turning either morbid or sentimental with its emphasis on mortality. I was prepared to be impressed, but what can one say when the first item, Bach's aria "Komm, susser Tod" sounds exactly the same as the second, Mahler's "Urlicht"? they belong musically to two worlds that couldn't be farther apart, yet the singer and his mild-mannered accompanist, Michael Gees, barely touches upon the emotional intensity of either. You'd never guess if the prevailing mood is supposed to be despair or hope. The contents of the two CDs ranges across two centuries, as follows:

Bach, J S:
Komm süsser Tod, BWV478

Brahms:
Feldeinsamkeit, Op. 86 No. 2

Wie rafft' ich mich auf Op. 32,1 (v.Platen)

Loewe, C:
Edward, Op. 1 No. 1 (Herder)

Erlkönig

Mahler:
Urlicht (from Symphony No. 2)

Revelge (Des Knaben Wunderhorn)

Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (Rückert-Lieder)

Mendelssohn:
Neue Liebe, Op. 19a No.
