Book Description

He says it was foretold, an inescapable way to bring them together. All Laurell Pittman knows is that ungovernable need surges through her body whenever Axiom is near. Who is this godlike stranger who appears out of nowhere to steal her away from home? She ought to be terrified. Instead, his kiss awakens unimaginable feelings, sensations of invisible hands stroking her body, a longing she can't deny. If she believes his claims - and in his arms how can she not? - she is destined to conceive a very special child...and he is the appointed father. As he fights off demons trying to prevent the child's birth and patiently teaches her how to use her own undiscovered powers, she finds her heart going out to this Balancer who is equally at home with good and evil, teetering on the edge of temptation, eternally caught...Between Light and Dark.

Editorial Reviews

***Best in Paranormal Finalist in the 2009 prestigious Maggie Awards for Published Authors***

"Elissa Wilds' light shines bright! Part fantasy, part Charmed, part Hitchcock, part steamy love story, Florida's own Ms. Wilds did a fine job of balancing all aspects of this story, sprinkling it with a great host of characters that both fascinate, and in some cases, terrify, to produce a brew that only left this reader wanting more." - The Examiner

"It is always a pleasure to pick up a review book by a brand-new-to-me author and be completely blown away by the story she tells...I am completely in love with the world that Elissa Wilds has created --the entire storyline is fascinating, and I loved every minute of it!" -  A Romance Reader at Heart

"A winning and creative story that fans of the magical will not want to miss." - Romance Reviews Today

"I found this new world interesting and the characters a joy to read about. I was drug into the battle and while I knew that good had to win, I couldn't wait to see how...her writing style, dialogue and characters are well thought out and ignite the reader's imagination. I look forward to her next book..." -  Night Owl Romance Book Reviews

"...captivated me to the dramatic conclusion...a great read!" - The Romance Studio

"...a true work of art. It is extremely rare to find a book with the depth of folk lore and adventure that this story has through out it's entirety. It is so sexy and hot your hair can curl, and you will be searching for either a cold shower or your significant other while reading. I adore this book. I give the highest recommendation that I can possibly give to a story. Be prepared to become addicted."

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good February 19, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I didn't expect to like this book so much. I thought it's going to be just another story where the evil forces or demons attack the earth or are planning to attack the earth and how the good guys, shape shifters, witches and what not in paranormal, get together to defeat them. Well, this book had all of it and more.

The relationship between Laurell and other people from the coven was nicely depicted. The hero Axiom reminded me of Tarzan, in a good way, lol. I think it was because just like Tarzan he was unknown to the human ways. His direct approach to things and situations was cute. And surprisingly there wasn't sex on every page as the book Blurb suggests. The setting of the story was beautiful, the plot imaginative and the ending perfect.

A very good debut novel by Elissa Woods. I just wish the chants the witches said were more imaginative and lyrical. If you have ever read a Nora Roberts novel where the witches are the main characters, you'll know what I am talking about. All in all, a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Battle Between Good and Evil November 6, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Within the past few months Laurell Pittsman's mother and beloved grandmother have died. They both died with secrets that will affect Laurell for the rest of her life.....if she lives very long. Laurell's famous, rich, actress mother, Elaine died of what appears to be suicide; her grandmother, Helen, of cancer. Laurell has not only inherited Graves Manor and her mother's fortune but an old book, Books of Shadows. As Laurell is giving her last good-byes to her family, a strange feeling comes over her and she hears her name. Following the sound, Laurell is met by Axiom.

Axiom is a gray god on a mission. Gray gods are part white, good and part black, evil. They don't sit on the Board of Gods and are seen by some white gods as being inferior and not to be trusted. Even the decision to allow Axiom to do a mission on earth was with a great debate and not everyone was sure this was the way to go. Axiom's mission is to be the father to the Earth Balancer.

The Earth Balancer is a person born from human and god. This person will be able to repeal evil with just a touch. Laurell is the chosen human to be the Earth Balancer's mother though she doesn't remember agreeing to it! She also has never heard of such nonsense and wants nothing to do with it. As far as she's concerned Axiom is a kidnapper and a nut.

The evil ones or Umbra need to kill Laurell before the Earth Balancer is born. They can take over humans and animals to help them in their quest. It doesn't matter to them if they kill her prior to conception or after, just that she is removed.

To help Axiom in his mission is a coven of witches. The leader has already been killed by the Umbra trying to locate where their base is.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stereotyped Hero and Unlikable heroine March 18, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Sorry, but Laurell (heroine) was just too immature to really enjoy. She whines throughout the book about her mother's faults and she, herself, acts with cruelty and vindictiveness. Axiom is your standard alpha male. In this case he is a god, a gray one. As you might expect from the "gray", he is torn between his good and evil sides. It is up to these two unlikely partners to save the world from disaster. Oh! and least I forget, a hot romance develops between them.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fascinating romantic fantasy October 21, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The Gray God Axiom desperately wants to join the Divine Council of the Light Realm. To achieve his ambition, he readily accepts the Council's terms; he must impregnate Laurell Pittman, who is oblivious to her heritage or that she is a witch. The Council knows their offspring will become the Earth Balancer god.

Axiom arrives on earth and immediately uses his most powerful weapon in his arsenal, "the yearning". Laurell is outraged with what the outsider has tried to do to her especially since she is attracted to him without his using his godly power. However in spite of her desire she does not trust the male claiming they are destined to mate in order to conceive a special child.

This is a fascinating romantic fantasy in which the paranormal elements supersede the love subplot. The story line is at its best when it focuses on the fantasy subplots even with a pantheon of characters. The romance never quite comes together as fans will find it difficult to accept the ambitious Gray God falling in love. Still this is an entertaining tale as sub-genre fans will enjoy stepping into Wilds' world where a basic axiom of the Gods is to be a member of the Divine Council of the Light Realm; in the hero's case at all cost to others.

2.0 out of 5 stars An OK Read April 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Between Light and Dark is an OK read. The storyline is good but a bit predictable. The characters are mostly 2-dimensional archetypes that grow a little more interesting & 3-dimensional near the end of the book. The main storyline involves a "grey god" who must father a remarkable child with a witch who must rediscover her witchy heritage and forgive her recently deceased mother for giving her a bad childhood. Extra characters are provided in a protective coven, a fractious council of gods & goddesses, and a nebulous group of evil "umbrae" who seek to stop the birth of the mystic child.

More About the Author

Elissa Wilds is an award-winning author of....blah, blah, blah...Okay, I just can't write about myself in third person. It's too darn serious, and I recommend avoiding taking yourself too seriously. I'll begin again.

I write paranormal romantic fiction and metaphysical/new age non-fiction. I enjoy investigating all things paranormal and incorporating what I learn into my stories. I hold Bachelor degrees in Communication and English/Creative Writing and a Master's degree in Communication.

Like many writers, I have a full life that includes a career in the corporate world. Luckily, I've been blessed with a knack for multi-tasking, a lot of energy, and strong organizational skills. I have successfully managed both my creative and my corporate lives for twenty years (and continuing).

I'm often asked what I like most about writing. There are too many to list, but here's one of the top 5: I can write my stories sitting in my pajamas in the middle of the night or at a coffee shop on Sunday afternoon while sipping chai tea latte.

In addition to writing, I enjoy singing, reading, learning to play guitar, meditating, spending time with my family, and playing in nature as much and as often as possible.

The details:

Favorites: Cold Stone ice cream (cake batter with graham cracker crust sprinkled in -Yum!), Mom's mac and cheese, my friend Krissy's homemade baklava, Indian cuisine, chai tea.

Favorite music: (very eclectic!) Nickelback, Evanescence, Laura Powers, Emmylou Harris, KT Tunstall, Fiona Horne, Iris Dement, Kate Bush, Christopher Jak, Gavin Degraw, The Decemberists, Enigma, and many, many more, (Yes, I even still adore some 80's rock - Def Leppard, Journey)

Favorite movies: can't pick a favorite but I really enjoy anything with a supernatural or romantic theme (better if it has both!)

Television shows: I rarely watch television (I prefer books!), but when I do, I enjoy Supernatural, Spartacus, Ghost Hunters, American Horror Story, Game of Thrones, Vampire Diaries, and True Blood.

Some of my favorite things: Hawaii, poetry, deep thinkers, bonfires, live music, kitties, bunnies, amber oil, nag champa incense.
