From Library Journal
This major collection of essays compiled by Holmlund (Romance and Asian languages, Univ. of Tennessee) and Fuchs (English/film studies, George Mason Univ.) is the first to focus on the connection between the sexuality of queer cinema and the social activism of documentary film. Ranging from pre-Stonewall films to such recent features as Flaming Creatures to MTV's Real World series, these essays add a new dimension to two potentially rich fields of study. The 15 contributors include such academic critics as Chris Straayer (Deviant Eyes, Deviant Bodies, LJ 1/97) and Linda Dittmar (From Hanoi to Hollywood, LJ 2/1/91). This excellent supplement to the literature of queer film studies belongs in academic libraries alongside Vito Russo's seminal Celluloid Closet (LJ 6/1/81).?Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A. & M.
