5.0 out of 5 stars a bittersweet romance
I want to register a different opinion on this manga than the reviewer below. Not only did I like Ms. Sakurazawa's art style a lot, but I liked her storytelling style. It's very lyrical and oblique, which seems to be the other reviewer's complaint, but I find it to be a great strength. One is left to read between the lines a lot, to hear the unspoken. It's very romantic...

3.0 out of 5 stars Uninmpressed
I really enjoyed the simple art style of this manga. It was very clean and uncluttered. However I found it hard to tell who was speaking. The characters are also poorly developed. Minako loves her friend Saki. She tells you this over and over again. Saki is cheated on by her boyfriend and breaks up with him. She gets a new one and cheats on him with her ex and others...

3.0 out of 5 stars Uninmpressed, April 14, 2005
This review is from: Between the Sheets (v. 3) (Paperback)
She gets a new one and cheats on him with her ex and others. Then when he cheats on her with Minako, she gets angry... She's a cheater who doesn't like finding out that she has been cheated on. Go figure?

I truely wish the characters had delved more deeply into the meanings behind their feelings (and why they would so easily and quickly hop into bed together). I would have enjoyed the story more.

It's very lyrical and oblique, which seems to be the other reviewer's complaint, but I find it to be a great strength. One is left to read between the lines a lot, to hear the unspoken. It's very romantic and bittersweet. I don't typically like manga in this genre; I'm normally more of a sci-fi or horror manga enthusiast. Nevertheless, I found Between the Sheets to be enchanting and emotionally compelling--the sense of melancholy and longing is overpowering.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best friend and...stalker?, May 1, 2008
This review is from: Between the Sheets (v. 3) (Paperback)
The Publishers Weekly summary on the information page sums up this story very well. The plot and characters are shallow, and the drawings are minimalist. "Scratchy" is a good description of the artwork style.

I didn't care for the characters in this book. They were both selfish and shallow, and Minako was more like a stalker than a lovesick best friend. Her behavior was creepy, and her inner dialogue became almost disturbing by the end of the book.

This could have been cute and sweet if it had actually been about best friends falling in love like the book blurb implies, but stalker stories and catty backstabbing just don't do it for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book from Erica Sakurazawa, September 22, 2011
This review is from: Between the Sheets (v. 3) (Paperback)
I very much enjoy the works of Erica Sakurazawa in general, but Between the Sheets is by far my favorite of hers.

The art is minimal, not my favorite style but I think it helps capture the gritty nature of her plots. What I love about Erica Sakurazawa's works is that they generally play on the more realistic side of relationships and life. Having been through a time where I developed a little bit of a girl-crush on my best friend, I feel like the story captured that awkward side of female relationships where girls may or may not be interested in one another sexually, but 'friendship' is too loose a term to describe the bond that you feel, and it's truly like breaking up with a long-time lover when you lose a friend that close. I love the realism displayed in the story. As another reviewer commented, there is a character who cheats on her boyfriend but has the gall to get mad at him for cheating on her - doesn't this happen every day? People don't follow a linear plot, and Sakurazawa gives us a story that feels like it's about real people, not one-dimensional characters.

I would highly recommend this manga for adult manga readers, especially women, who love manga but are a little tired of the high school love triangle overdramatics. This is a great book for twentysomethings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Between the Sheets Review, August 3, 2007

I am new to Manga, so I was recommended this by amazon after I had bought another book, and it looked female friendly so I bought it. After reading it, which took about a short 20 minutes, I was somewhat disappointed. I thought that there would be more of a story line, but there wasn't much of one. Had it been a little more in-depth as some other Mangas tend to be, I would have enjoyed it much more.
