Book Description

A blackmailing stripper. A self-help preaching hit man. A gangster with a penchant for leeches. The streets of San Francisco have never been so twisty as Jack Waters struggles with powerful and mysterious forces trying to destroy his family, his sanity, his life.

Another thrilling read from the author of Ransom Dreams, Acapella Blues, and Love Stings.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My main character in Between a Smile and a Tear, Jack Waters, a successful novelist, is a recovering alcoholic coming to terms with the damage his drinking has caused to his family and friends. He's trying his best to make amends, but is it too late? Is it impossible to right some wrongs?

I've read a number of James Hall's antic thrillers set in Florida (primarily the Thorn books) with their wild and crazy bad guys and they inspired me to create my villain here: Wallace Unger. I tried to make him both humorous and scary, a counterpoint to the serious and darker action and themes of the novel.

Wallace is wild and crazy, funny and dumb, but also unpredictable and a dangerous antagonist made even more fearsome by his employer, the amoral gangster boss, NIck Ravelli.

This is a "bigger" novel than others that I have written, featuring multiple point-of-view characters, more subplots, a wider range including political and social forces impacting the characters, as well as a deeper attention to location and geography.

I've tried to make San Francisco a major character in its own right here. I grew up in the city and know it well, but supplemented that knowledge with research and maps and a couple of trips back to the Bay Area. I think San Francisco, in all of its beauty and mystery, comes alive in the novel and I hope you agree.

I put my heart and soul into this book and hope you feel that while you read.

Thanks for taking the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and credible March 29, 2012
By C. Mank
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was between books and willing to look at something new, when I happened upon Bucchianeri's "Between A Smile And A Tear." I'm an avid reader, so my standards are high. This one didn't disappoint.

Writer Jack Waters has just tasted his first success, and is sorting out his troubled marriage, when he's sucker punched--seemingly out of the blue. What follows is a highly credible quest for answers by a man who slowly realizes that he must reexamine everything he trusts and believes in, complicated by his being unwittingly snared into a brutal criminal underworld.

I found this a solidly entertaining story. (It wouldn't make a bad movie. IKR! I should wash my mouth out with soap now!) The characters are fresh, complicated and yet authentic. The detail is rich enough to allow you to paint the scene in your imagination. Bucchianeri has a way with suspense--hooking you, drawing you in a little, letting you play out a bit, then drawing you in some more--keeping the line just so taut. Chapter by chapter, you weigh each potential outcome as new details surface.

In the end, he wraps it up credibly. All in all, a satisfying read! Bucchianeri is on my must-read list now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Story March 21, 2012
By D. Waid
Format:Kindle Edition
Between a Smile and a Tear was not a bad story. It wasn't great either. It held my attention, Had me flipping the pages, to find out what was going to happen. But you know pretty fast who the bad guys are and who is trying to ruin Jacks life and why. But it is full of twists and turns, who to trust, and who shouldn't be trusted. For a writer Jack doesn't seem very smart. But it all ends the way it should. I received a copy of this in exchange for my review. I would say it was entertaining and good way to pass time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't love it... March 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jack Waters is a writer, a recovering alcoholic, father and husband. Life is going okay until the day he is sitting having coffee, meets a fan, wakes up in a motel room, does not remember anything, and his whole life is turned upside down. Although it had decent reviews and the ending did surprise me, I just couldn't sink my teeth into this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this action-packed story September 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Jack Waters is a mystery writer who is enjoying some measure of celebrity and wealth. He is also a recovering alcoholic with a history of indiscretions. While his family is away, the final straw is broken as Jack's life becoming a roller coaster ride of emotions, misunderstandings and betrayals. All Jack wanted was to get his wife and son back. What he finds in the interim are bad guys hell-bend on separating him from his family and his money.

I was given a complimentary copy of Between a Smile and a Tear in exchange for my review. Well, every minute spent in reading this piece was my good fortune. All in all, I admired Jack's resolve to clear his name and get his family back together. I loathed the sociopathic bad guys with a vengeance. In fact, I sat in my seat yelling at the book's characters to *watch out* while shouting profanities at them. Yep, I found myself very interactive in the whole story. But that's just me. My 4 stars are only because of a few writing flukes that could have tightened the piece. Those maybe one or two unnecessary writing quirks were none too strange to put my finger on. And,that won't stop me from keeping Bucchianeri on my TBR list of authors to watch. I like his work. Hope you will too~!~.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into it. August 3, 2013
By Dog Mom
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sorry but the beginning did not grab me. Jack was SUCH a cliche! An alcoholic writer with one best selling book who couldn't write sober? PLZ. The amount of money he supposedly got on a two-book deal was ludicrous. The author needs to start reading PW for a reality check. I almost stopped reading when the over-dressed chick picked him up in the coffee house but crossed my fingers and kept reading. Nope, it turned out exactly as I expected. I gave up and deleted this novel from my Kindle.

I enjoyed this book. For a new auther (for me) it was a book that held my attention. I love books that I want to take everywhere with me... so if I have a spare moment ... I can snatch a chapter or two. This was one of those kind of books.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a book that made you keep reading to find out the next event. It also made you empathise with the character and become annoyed when things weren't going right. Well written and I would definitely recommend this book to others.
