Pearl Buck - What A Lady!,
By RomiLee (Overland Park, KS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Between Two Worlds: A Story about Pearl Buck (Creative Minds Biography) (Hardcover)
My third-grade (8 years old) daughter was given Pearl Buck as a "great american" to research and write a book report about. This was the only book we could find for her age group. It is written not as a "biography" but more as a "story" about Pearl Buck's life. And what a life! I couldn't put it down and I even went so far as to purchase this book to donate to my daughter's school library. Great and inspirational book for girls who need an example of how one small person can make such a huge difference in the world!

Thought provoking and engaging,

This review is from: Between Two Worlds: A Story about Pearl Buck (Creative Minds Biography) (Hardcover)
A child of missionaries living in China, Pearl Buck is treated as a foreigner while living in a place that has long been her home. American by blood but Chinese by culture, Peal is misunderstood and mistreated because of the rising fear and political strife within the country. Throughout her life, Peal moves back and forth between China and the United States. Both places are her home and both people are her people. Following the wise words of her mother, Pearl pursues her dream of bringing her two worlds together...
Speaking as a future teacher, I think this book would be excellent for discussing prejudice and misunderstanding. This book may be especially relevant for ESL students or children familiar with missionary work. The chapter titles could be more descriptive and the cover image more colorful, but overall I thought this was an engaging and thought provoking book.

I am a Pearl Buck reader. I have read most of her books; those written as Pearl Buck, as well as those written under the nom de plume John Sedges.
