Book Description

January 1, 1992
This unprecedented book addresses the issues resulting from mixed heritage and shows how children of mixed marriages have learned to balance the duality that can be at times wonderful, at times puzzling. Based on hundreds of interviews, it shows readers how to live within both worlds, yet make the necessary choices.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book deals sensitively and explicitly with problems of identity, ethnicity, and establishing one's own home and identification which adults from religious intermarriages face. The book stresses that one's dual heritage is for life, although it implies one will choose to identify more with one religion than the other. While written from a Jewish perspective, the book is addressed to all descendants of Jewish-Christian marriages. Recommended for most public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life saver for those who feel alone!, December 30, 2000
This review is from: Between Two Worlds: Adult Children of Jewish-Gentile Intermarriage (Paperback)
Leslie Goodman-Malamuth and Robin Margolis have done a great thing by writing this book and affirming that children of interfaith marriages do have identity conflicts and issues about growing up with a mixed heritage. It's not a cut-and-dried thing--a lot of Christians regard us as Jewish and Jews want nothing to do with us (but only if we are patrilineally descended...if you have a Jewish mother, you are a Jew). This book has become one of my best friends by letting me know that I'm not alone in my quest for religious/cultural identity and that I'm not crazy for feeling an innate affinity for Judaism. It contains interviews with interfaiths that affiliate as Christians, Jews, agnostics, or whatever and presents ways for you to help deal with the duplicity in your life. This book is out-of-print, but if you are a child of intermarriage questioning your spirituality or ethnicity, it would be worth it to you to scour local or online used bookstores to find a copy, it's that worthwhile!
