Biography

“I guess in this culture of ever-shortening attention spans, it’s good if a song can lift us out of the madness, even if only for a few minutes.” – Peter Bradley Adams

It’s no wonder that directors like Cameron Crowe favor the music of singer-songwriter and guitarist/pianist Peter Bradley Adams with choice placement in their films and TV productions: ... Read more in Amazon's Peter Bradley Adams Store

Editorial Reviews

Peter Bradley Adams began his musical journey in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of five when he discovered the Beatles Sgt. Peppers album in his fathers record collection. After wearing the record out on his aqua green Playschool record player, Adams went on to create his own house music, setting up plastic trash cans and using pencils as drum sticks. Eventually his grandfather purchased real drum sticks to replace the pencils and a true musician was born. Peters Beatles obsession quickly grew into Beatles lip-sync sessions with friends on his street, and impromptu basement concerts for parents.

The first instrument that Adams played, at age 6, was a piano purchased by his parents from the old Birmingham, AL Tutweiler Hotel before it was demolished. Adams remembers both the piano and the lemon seeds inside it that were left over from spilled cocktails.

As a child, Peters music was influenced by his grandfather who had been a jazz clarinetist in big bands during the time of Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain. Also a pianist, Adams remembers lying under his grandfathers piano listening to him play.

Adams' went on to earn a B.A. and Masters Degree in composition and eventually wound up in Los Angeles where he worked as a freelance film and TV composer.

In 2000, Adams co-founded the duo Eastmountainsouth, and in 2002 they were signed by Robbie Robertson (of The Band) to DreamWorks Records. Adams has since released three solo records (Gather Up, Leavetaking and Traces) and this, his fourth, Between Us, is through Maine-based label Mishara Music. The record was produced by Adams, Jonathan Trebing and longtime collaborator Lex Price.

When asked about the progression from his first release Gather Up to his current release, Between Us, Adams says, I think I've been progressively finding my voice, both as a songwriter and a singer; and although I feel like I'm finally starting to hit my stride, there's still this continual dissatisfaction.... still a feeling that I haven't found it yet.

I've been enjoying PBA's folk-flavored music since his time as half of the duo known as eastmountainsouth, which was Pete with Kat Maslich. Since then, his various solo albums have shown him to be a skilled singer-songwriter and also a solid producer and arranger. My favorite thing about PBA is his uniquely hushed vocal style, but I also like his sense for adding just the right atmosphere to each song. Both of those things are on display with his new album, Between Us. The instrumentation accompanying PBA's voice is sparse, with discretely placed acoustic guitars, slide guitar, percussion and electronics creating perfect backdrops for each song. He has also recruited a great new singer for the duet songs, Molly Parden's. She's a nice discovery; I'll have to keep an eye out for her appearances in the future. The songs I currently like best on Between Us are "Be Still My Heart" and "Full Moon Song," but the whole album is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid solo outing August 21, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I first heard Peter Bradley Adams with Eastmountainsouth and followed his work ever since. Everyone of his solo albums are solid, and I've enjoyed them repeatedly. That said, the one EMS album has been in heavy rotation since its release oh so long ago, and it says a lot when in my opinion the best song on this record "Mother Don't Look Down" features his old EMS partner Kat. It's kind of bittersweet, in that although it's a great song and he's had some good solo records, these two are just so exceptional together, I can't help but wonder how many great EMS songs are we missing out on?

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Voice April 6, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
I was listening to samples of songs on Amazon's MP3 store. Trying out people I've not heard before. Every once in a while you will stumble across someone that really calls to you, but rarely will you discover such a find as Peter Bradley Adams. Although the voices are very different, he does remind me of James Taylor. There is an instant invitation to learn the song so that you can sing the song.
Peter Bradley Adams has full bottom tones with a clear note on top. He has the skill set to hold long vowels without a need to use vocal acrobatics to cover up an ok voice. He has a strong, wonderful, resonate voice.
The songs are story telling. Maybe that is what makes me think of James Taylor. There is a musicality binding a story and delivering it for the listener to engage in.
I would love to see some change up in songs, as some of them do sound a little bit alike, but it isn't enough to even reduce one star for me. Peter Bradley Adams has earned himself a new fan.
