Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Between Us was recorded in 1979 and the title is a tribute to his musicians who performed on the album including Rupert Hine, Phil Palmer, Bob Weston and Geoffrey Richardson. Songs include "Los Angeles," "Mademoiselle" and "How Many Ways."

Deluxe Vinyl Replicas by Culture Factory constitute high quality reissued compact-discs which reproduce all the components of the original LPs and are their exact replicas in compact-disc size (5.3 x 5.3 inches), with authentic single or gatefold cardboard jackets and paper sleeves. In addition to the above, each compact-disc Deluxe Vinyl Replica includes a black finish CD complete with the original label to give it the look and feel of the original record album. Culture Factory strives to achieve an authentic sound with the highest possible fidelity to the original studio masters. Our remastering process brings out the music's true dynamics and original clarity with low levels of noise. In the remastering studio the audio tracks are handled in the form of high-definition, 96Kz / 24-bit digital files for greatest preservation of fidelity. Signal compression is sometimes used to bring out frequencies that were absent or barely heard in the original recordings, and we use the least amount of compression possible. While sound perception varies greatly among individuals our vinyl replica CDs are designed to provide the optimal listening experience when using flat EQ settings. Brand new, original, factory-sealed, limited edition CD release.

We know Murray Head from his leading role in Jesus Christ Superstar - and later from his international Nr 1 hit, One Night In Bangkok, from the musical Chess, in which he also played a lead.

Here, he brings us a solo album that is smooth and deep. It is blues, funk, ballads and pop, all rolled into one.

His fragile voice can be powerful and blow you away. Then it changes to a soulful song, or a country tinted diddy.

The song "Sorry I love You" alone is worth it: one of the most unnerving, majestic and impressive love songs ever made....

Between Us is a departure from Murray's lush productions, Say It Ain't So and Voices. Working with super-producer Rupert Hine, he's pulled out the unexpectedly edgy, "Rubbernecker," and "Sorry I Love You." "It's So Hard Singing The Blues" doesn't have the gut punch required of blues, but its spare production is a nice counterpoint to the few lyrical songs on the album, "Good Old Days," and "Lady I Could Serve You Well," among them. Gavin Wright's string arrangements add grace to "Lady," and "Countryman." But the strings also screech and cascade in the unnerving, cathedral-echo of "Sorry I Love You." This song is one of the few times when Murray soars to the tortured heights he reached as Judas. The album finishes with the partying "Bye, Bye, Bye." If you are familiar with either Anthony Head or Rupert Hine's speaking voice, you can try to pick them out at the end.

The themes of these songs all look back to love in a way that I had never heard before encountering this album when I was still a teenager back in 1979. This was a time when the airwaves were filled with Boston and Springsteen and Neil Young and Genesis. Punk was fading and New Wave was ascending. Love songs were either battle hymns or the usual barely-disguised yearnings for carnal knowledge. Typical for this phase of growing up, I was lost in various infatuations with girls I knew, egged on by those battle hymns and not insignificantly by those other tunes that spoke of more basic instincts. Confusion was inevitable.

One of those girls who I was infatuated with, and who actually liked me, as I later found out, one day gave me the cassette of this album, earnestly recommending especially that I pay attention to "Sorry, I love You". Sure, ok, I said. I made a copy of the cassette, because that's what we did back then, and skimmed through the songs. They were ok, I thought.

Then something happened. I began to realize that I was listening to songs about love written by an adult for adults. This was the first album to bring home to me how love is experienced by an adult, and how the realities, and whimsy, too (for there is a good amount of that on the album), were so far from the amateurish experiences that I was having as an awkward 17 year-old, or from the abrupt or over-stylized depictions of love that filled popular radio. This album, for me, was a view into the future, of responsibilities, entanglements, relationships, marriage and parenthood, and all the rest. Weird that Between Us should have done that, but it did.
