Carpenter, intricately weaves the multi-textured cultural history of the African diaspra experience into her new book on African-American art of the late twentieth century. By focusing our gaze on the works of Betye Saar she has rekindled the creative flame that drives contemporary art. I would highly recommend this intimate portrait for those both new and familiar with African-American art. It could serve as a centerpiece in any collection of literature. |
