A slapstick comedy starring Chris Farley, Beverly Hills Ninja is part prop-gag movie and part testament to the late comedian's physical comedic abilities. As a baby, Haru (Farley) appeared on the coastal shores of Japan. Legend has it that a foreigner would arrive and become the greatest ninja ever, known as the "Great White Ninja." As Haru grew, it became apparent: he was not the one. But when a beautiful stranger named Sally (Nicollette Sheridan) appears at the dojo seeking a ninja's help, Haru finds his calling. Through a series of mix-ups (generally caused by Haru himself), Haru is framed for murder and he follows Sally to Beverly Hills to set things right. Finding out Sally's boyfriend is a counterfeiter and murderer, Haru with the help of hotel bellboy Joey (Chris Rock) and unknowingly with the help of his ninja brother Gobei (Robin Shou) takes down the counterfeit ring and finds his place among the ninja clan.

Beverly Hills Ninja is full of individual comic gags that are hilarious in their purity--call it sadistic, but sometimes it's just plain funny watching a guy unwittingly walk into a lamppost while carrying on a conversation. Farley was a master at these tried-and-true gags, which reach right back into the origins of comedy. But it's not all slapstick; a scene where Haru is so taken by dancers at a local strip bar that he joins in is reminiscent of the mud-wrestling scene from Stripes. Beverly Hills Ninja may be considered a low-brow romp, but a romp it is nonetheless. --Shannon Gee

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Coda...., March 30, 2000

This review is from: Beverly Hills Ninja (DVD)
Beverly Hills Ninja is NOT the best DVD you will ever own. it is not meant to be. It isn't even Farley's TRUE last movie. But it IS his final film as a lone star, and his star shines brightly.

The story is simple enough. Legend states that a "Great White Ninja" will come to a Ninja Clan and bring Greatness. When a young baby washes ashore..it is assumed it is the Great White Ninja of Legend. It's not.

From there on out, the plot is a haphazard mix of action, jokes, and some pieces of 'story'. The plot is admittedlty thin, but it serves its due just fine.

Chris Rock is notable, but underused. This movie also provides a good showcase for Robin Shou, better known for 'Mortal Kombat'. His action scenes are fantastic.

The best jokes seem to come the most natural...Farley with nunchuks, Farley in 'disguise', Farley's Spiritual 'Levitation'..and the Ninja Training sequence is a highlight of slapstick fun that previews what COULD have been.

On the technical side, the DVD is Anamorphic, and has a helpful Spanish alternate language dub that is a GREAT feature. The rest of the disc is sadly 'Bare Bones'..just a trailer, and the obligatory 'Talent Files'.

I DO wish there had been some deleted scenes, or even a commentary.

The picture, as stated, is Anamorphic,it is in both widescreen(1:85) and pan&scan and displays very little grain. It is amazingly sharp and pleasant.

Viewing this disc is a pure pleasure..and the sound, while not too active in surround, is rich and bold.

I highly recommend this as a purchase. It can be viewed multiple times, and is never wearing enough to get 'old', thus upping its value as a purchase.

This may be the last true "Chris Farley" film..he may have left us, but he left us laughing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger is my companion., September 13, 2005

What's there not to laugh at in this movie. The very concept of Farley playing a white Ninja just makes me laugh. This is a movie you watch more then once and laugh harder the second, third, fourth time around. There is some classic comedy in this movie. Some of my personal favoriate scenes are:

1)Farley in the Dojo practicing his Ninja moves and destroying, breaking, and burning everything he touches.
2)When he first meets Chris Rock - and teaches him his "first lessons" in the Ninja art.
3) When he disguised as a Cook.
4) When he disguised as Chuck Walters.
5) The ending battles with him and his brother Ninja.

The entire movie is a riot. It's very much on the stupid side (much like Dumb and Dumber) and is full of laughter. A comedy classic.. an underrated one at that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hilarious movie ever, May 7, 2006
This review is from: Beverly Hills Ninja (DVD)
Don't be fooled with the negative reviews by critics or low scores by some movie review sites. .If you are not the type of viewer expecting some serious message or plot from a movie, watch just for pure entertainment then this is one of the best hilarious movie ever.Just relax and watch this movie. This is the first movie of Chris Farley I saw (on a tv channel in 2002) and instantly it made me his big big fan. I laughed and laughed and laughed through every singe moment of the movie. This is the one of the best spoof movies besides the light of naked gun series. Chris farley is the best in this kind of geners. Once you watch his devotion in the film and his funny facial expressions, body language ,you will surely consider other latest so called comedy stars and their movies so boring . I am from Bangladesh (Asia) and I don't know what people of USA and other countries think about this guy but he will always remain
as the best hilarious actor of all time in my mind. I think "Beverly Hills Ninja" is better than Farley's other titles (Even than "Tommy Boy"). Just uniquely hilarious. I give it 10/10.
