Grade 5 Up-- A warm, knowledgeable biography of America's opera superstar. Paolucci writes of the 7-year-old who had already memorized 22 arias by listening to her mother's record collection, the 11-year-old who had chirped radio's first singing commercial for "Rinso White," the prima donna who triumphed as Cleopatra in Handel's Julius Caesar , and the businesswoman who set the troubled New York City Opera back on its feet during her tenure as director. Paolucci has skillfully worked a grand amount of operatic information into this volume; what emerges is not only the biography of a talented and energetic woman, but also the story of a musician. The book is illustrated with well-chosen black-and-white photographs. A good "next book" for readers of Mona Kerby's Beverly Sills (Viking, 1989), which is aimed at a younger audience. --Ann Stell, The Smithtown Library, NY
