Goldilocks and the Three Bears is in itself a cliche, and its spin-offs are usually insipid. Alan MacDonald has changed that by putting humorous twists on the story and adding a surprise ending guaranteed to delight all but the most stodgy. A perfect book to use with the original Goldilocks for comparing and contrasting using Venn diagrams. This book would be a wonderful addition to school and public libraries.

MacDonald's story tells us what happens once Goldilocks leaves the 3 bears' house. Simply told, with adorable pictures, this book is sure to be on every teacher's shelf as a follow-up to any telling of "The 3 Bears." Gwyneth's Williamson's illustrations are bold and will easily hold any child's attention. Children will also learn that revenge sometimes hurts poor, defenselss creatures ;-)

Witty and intelligent,

A great book - there should definitely be more sequels to famous children's stories. Very witty, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Amusing illustrations too!

I just purchased the Spanish version of this book, "!Cuidado Con Los Osos!", here in Colombia and it is the funniest book I have ever read. Like previous reviewers I will probably not use it with my five year old for a while, but I am sure when I begin teaching high school Spanish in the states next year my students will love it and learn a lot of vocabulary...Again, not for small children...Pero, muy chistoso!

This book is really, really funny. I bought it for myself, as an adult, but will someday share it with my kids. I used to mess up the stories myself for my sister's kids-- they loved it when you made something different from the same old story they'd heard a thousand times. It would be great for kids who have heard the Goldilocks story, and who wonder about the way Goldie seems to get off scott free for tearing up the Bears' house. I do see the point of those parents who are worried it teaches inappropriate behavior, but I think as one other reviewer pointed out, the fact that an "innocent" victim ends up suffering the consequenses of the bears' actions is a good lesson to teach. Definitely don't just leave this book lying around with no discussion of it! And since the best thing in the world is to read *with* kids, think of the teaching moment you have when the bears have to slink off at the end and the danger they face for not thinking of the possible consequences of their actions. And, finally, it's just plain funny, and kids love inappropriate humor. I think that a sense of humor is a great thing for all kids to be exposed to at an early age, and the sense that stories aren't just supposed to teach, but sometimes to delight.

A wonderful sequel to Goldilocks with the Three Bears deciding to pay Goldilocks back for the mayhem she created in their home. Once they've arrived at her house, they proceed to have a destructive romp through her home. When surprised by her appearance, they expect her to be angry and upset. Instead she laughs and tells them it's not her house after all. Soon, they realize they've destroyed the home of the big bad wolf and he's coming through the door... allowing the imagination to lead into another story. Another delightful story originating in Great Britain.

I thought this book was very amusing, witty.
I was a little sorry to see those adult readers that were up in arms over its morality when you think that the original Goldilocks wasn't any more moral. You might as well erase 90% of fairy stories when you get right down to it! Anyway, children that have the privilege of reading books are usually the educated ones that are able to make moral decisions! What about all the unprivileged children? We are talking about fairy tales..

Goldilocks trashed the three bears house. Now it is their turn.
This was an amusing little story that should not be taken seriously as to teaching your children that vandalism is ok. It is supposed to be funny and light hearted. Afterall how many bears take bubble baths? Shave? The art work is interesting as my daughter liked looking at the pictures. Overall a good book. My four year old liked it.....

Nice try,

This book was an interesting twist on an old story. I did like the lighthearted humor of the book, but I'm not so sure it would be appropriate for children, unless you address some of the issues after reading the book (such as vandalism, revenge, and apologies). MacDonald had a nice concept of following up on a classic, but it could have been done better. There is no apology for breaking into the wrong house and vandalizing the property of someone else. It teaches a poor lesson about revenge. The illustrations were good, not great, but pretty decent.

Poor choice for unsupervised readers,

I was shocked to find myself waiting for a lesson that never comes.....the message that revenge is an acceptable response for anger is too subtle for a child to understand. No closure, no remorse. This book should only be approached in a supervised atmosphere, where the morals and message can be fully explained and understood. |
