Rip Roaring Good Time,

This review is from: Beware the Club Girls (Paperback)
Beware the Club Girls is a smart alecky commentary on life, love (or lack thereof), and business with an underlying hint of common sense. I'm not sure if this is autobiographical or not and the introduction sugguests the book is a blend of fact and fiction.Whatever it is, I got a good laugh out of it.

I had fun passing this one around the office. The parts about relationships and abortive relationships, are a an interesting counter-point to Sex and the City. I'm waiting for a sequel

This was a hard book to categorize, since the comedy changes formats with each section. There's a little political satire, a little observational humor and some fiction. Stylistically, I'm stretching to find a good point of comparison. The book seems to be at least partially autobiographical, and I would almost draw a parallel to David Sedaris, with the cavaet that style is more of an intellectual mock-macho/bravado. A hetero Sedaris? Perhaps. But it is funny.

This Allen guy's giving a lot of attitude. Lots of short bits resembling the sort of anecdotal humor reserved for roasts, although it may not actually be anecdotal. Sometime sophomoric (that's not always a bad thing), sometimes political. The only thing constant throughout is the urban, "what kind of s**t do you think you're pulling" attitude. Not for soccer moms in denial.

This is a pretty good book; easy reads and fun stories. There's one about Vin Diesel that you'll tell your friends about. I suggest picking it up.

The adventures of an urban cynic in any many short vigennettes. He had a wonderful "anti-valentine" column in the paper a couple weeks ago. It provokes a knowing smile, especially if you've been there.

Eclectic Laughs,

This books covers a lot of territory in the targets of the jokes. I personally loved the Bill Clinton section and the picture of the author looking suspiciously under his desk, as though he had an unexpected little friend underneath, that adorned the title page.I also particularly enjoyed the detective send-up short story "The Professional Girlfriends" that ended the book. Allen should do a full length novel.

A mirror into my life?,
By "mandy999" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beware the Club Girls (Paperback)
I read this book it was as if the author had a mirror into my life. His short stories about life, dating, and bar hoping in the big city were absolutely hilarious. His theories are wild and crazy just like life in the city. I sobbed with laughter mainly because they hit so close to home.

Read/Buy David Sedaris instead,

I typically enjoy this type of book, ie: short stories/essays, black humor, satire, etc, however I found this to be extremely unfunny. I purchase a lot of authors I've never heard of (Todd Allen, for example) as a result of the reviews on this site. Big mistake purchasing and reading this book. It wasn't necessarily bad, just not funny. If you're looking for humor, short essays, etc, try David Sedaris or Henry Alford. Both hysterical.

This guy has a column in the New York Resident, one of local weeklies. Looks like the same photo on cover as on his column. Its funny stuff. I like it best when he's writing about bar culture and ripping on politicians. You'll snicker.
