Terrific book for kids!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beware of Dog (McGrowl #1) (Paperback)
Just when I thought the only books I could get my 9-year-old son to read were books which had him running into our room in the middle of the night with nightmares...here's comes McGrowl, the Bionic Dog! My son laughed out loud when he read it, then gave it to me and my husband to read. It's fun and I guess you could even say witty, with just enough adventure to keep my son turning pages. It's the kind of book you won't mind reading along with your kid. I can't wait for the next McGrowl book and neither can my son!

My son loves McGrowl books,

This review is from: Beware of Dog (McGrowl #1) (Paperback)
This book isn't going to be a classic, but it is fun to read. I have a young son who loves language and we read this book when he was in Kindergarten. Now each time there is another McGrowl book available through a school book fair, he adds it to his collection. We don't have any pets, but he loves the silliness of a bionic dog. The plotlines are ridiculous, but it sparks his imagination and he gets tickled each time we read about Thomas, Violet and McGrowl. If your child likes to think outside the box, he or she will probably enjoy this book and dream up their own adventures about having such a dog.

If you like dogs I would recommend the book, McGrowl, Beware of Dog to read. There are two main characters in this book, Violet Schnayerson and Thomas Wiggins. Violet and Thomas find a dog and they take it to the vet for the night. They come back to get the dog in the morning. Thomas, whos father is scared of dogs, takes the dog home to his house. BEWARE of what happens next! If you want to know what happens next read this book. This book takes place in a small neighborhood during the morning. The two kids don't know what there in for. I love this book because I love dogs and adventures!

My son is 8 and the content is perfect for an eight year old. It uses some really big words that stretch his vocabulary yet the content is void of situations that should be saved for older children. The humor is also expressed in a way that hits his gifted little mind. Our family loved it and can't wait to purchase the next 5 books.

Cheerfully loopy, without that ironic aftertaste,

There are some very funny young reader books out there, but in many of them the author isn't content to just write a funny or engaging story. The author also has to add brief ironic subtext, either to seek favor with the hip parents who are reading the book aloud or to demonstrate that the author has bigger prospects after he pays the rent with this book. That's O.K., but sometimes you just want an author who's comfortable and happy with what he's doing now.Well, I think this series fits the bill. The stories are a bit silly, but not aggressively over the top. The kids are engaging; the parents aren't idiots; the villains aren't terrifying, and the overall effect is fun and just advanced enough to be a bit of challenge. Certainly worth a try.

A boy named Thomas Wiggins always wanted a dog. He wished for a dog for his birthday for six straight years. He and his friend Violet went to the woods one day to hang out and so Thomas could dig a hole to try to find whatever he possibly could. When they were in the woods, Violet spotted a storm brewing. She told Thomas so he also noticed. It started to rain and Thomas spotted what seemed to be a bear. When he got a better look, he noticed that it was a dog. His birthday wish had come true. They both noticed that the dog seemed lost and hungry, so they fed it Violet's emergency candy lollipop, and he ate it right up. They took the dog home. They were walking the dog for exercise one day, and he was hit by a car and seemed to be dead. They took him to a vet who made the dog fully bionic because that was the only way the dog could survive. The dog had super powers after the surgery. He could run really fast, jump to extreme heights, and smell/hear from long distances. Unfortunately, that's all I can tell you. You'll have to read the book to know the rest... I would recommend this book for children under 14. If you love dogs, this book is for you. I like this book because I love dogs, I like to read about how people get their birthday wishes, and there are dramatic parts to balance with the lightheartedness of the rest of the book.

Q of A #7,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Beware of Dog (McGrowl #1) (Paperback)
If you enjoy a good adventure story that keeps you guessing then you should read this book. Also, if you like dogs or animal stories you will probably like this book as well. This fictional book was written by Bob Balaban. He is a very good writer who uses a lot of details. This book is a little different than other books because it brings out both sad and happy emotions. This author is very creative with his descriptions. The author takes the reader along with Thomas as he starts an adventure that includes his biggest wish --- to have his very own dog!
Beware of Dog takes place in a small town in Cedar Springs, Idaho. The setting takes place on a slippery road during a heavy rainstorm. Our main character is a boy named Thomas who wears glasses. He is very tall for his age (six feet tall). He is very smart in almost every subject. He has a best friend named Violet. Violet is also Thomas' neighbor. They both are in the fifth grade. This story is about a dog and the children. It was going to rain that morning and like Thomas always says, "It is a perfect day for worms!" They find this lost shaggy dog while walking to school. They take the dog to the veterinarian to get it checked out because it was hurt. The veterinarian said that they could pick him up the next day. They cannot wait so they both get up early in order to pick up the dog first thing in the morning. When they pick him up they notice something odd. All of a sudden the dog is so strong he can break through a wall and carry half the wall with him. Thomas can also understand the dogs thoughts! The children believe that the veterinarian had something to with the dog's new abilities. The vet notices the extraordinary powers that the dog has. Can Thomas and Violet help the dog before it is too late? Will the veterinarian take over the dog....find out by reading the book? After I finished reading the book I realized that it is most likely for students in about sixth grade. I still liked the book even though it was not as challenging as I wanted it to be. It is still a good book to read for younger students. What I learned from this story is if you notice something looks wrong then you should have an adult check it out. If I had to rate this book I would give it 2 stars out of 5 because it was too easy for me. If I was younger I would probably have given it 3 stars for the plot and storyline. This book is still an exciting book to read.

I think you should read McGrowl because it is very exciting. It has lots of interesting things going on in the story. There is lots of action and fun in the story. In one part, McGrowl gets captured, and if you want to find out what happens next, read the book! I liked this book because I like adventures and dogs. It made me feel sad when he got captured, but happy in other parts of the book.

I think this book is a very nice transitional book from simple chapter books into more complex books. My 8-yr old daughter, who is a very good reader, did expand her vocabulary the use of bigger and more complex words. If you love dog stories, you'll like this one too.
