Book Description

January 30, 2007

Lily Tyler's very interested in her sexy new neighbor, private jet pilot Brady Cole. Brady could really go for smart, gorgeous Lily. The fire that's generated whenever they're together isn't just chemical . . . it's nuclear! But then there's Doug . . .

The real ruler of the roost—Lily's noisy, nasty, match-mauling pooch—Doug likes to greet anyone he dislikes with yaps, nips, and very unpleasant surprises. And Doug does not like Brady. (Doug, in fact, doesn't like anybody—except Lily, of course. And, oddly enough, the squeaky clean, partner-track attorney whom Lily's domineering dad would love for his dutiful daughter to marry.)

Brady's no canine fan to begin with—and Doug's the devil-dog incarnate! But Lily could never get serious with anyone who doesn't click with her precious puppy—so Brady's going to need a lot more than great looks, smooth charm, and hot passion to get himself out of the doghouse and into Lily's life!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

College professor Lily Tyler has a domineering father, a distant and unemotional boyfriend, a bevy of supportive women friends (including Megan, the vet from Guys & Dogs, 2006), and an overly protective French bulldog named Doug who hates men. Her well-ordered if less than satisfying life flies into wild disarray once private pilot Brady Cole moves to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to escape a deranged stalker. Doug's diabolical machinations add humor to this delightful comedic romance with parallels to Jane Austen's Emma that will appeal to readers who like feel-good reads, dog lovers, and fans of Cathie Linz. About the Author

Elaine Fox has spent enough of her life dating to know that the scenarios described in this book are completely plausible -- though she disclaims any direct experience with any of them. Fortunately, however, she has been able to parlay this extended search for romance into a career and hopes her readers appreciate the cathartic experience while living happily-ever-after lives themselves. Elaine currently lives in Virginia.

4.0 out of 5 stars 25 pounds of canine hostility..., February 9, 2007

This review is from: Beware of Doug (Mass Market Paperback)
When pilot Brady Cole moves into the duplex (or "twin house") owned by Lily Taylor's family, he' is instantly attracted to Lily, and everyone he comes into contact with makes the same warning: "beware of Doug." Convinced Doug is her boyfriend, he is amused to learn that Doug is actually her man-hating dog. Doug goes to great lengths to keep other males away from his Lily. Lily's pseudo boyfriend Gerald is the only male Doug is nice too; perhaps because Gerald has yet to plant anything other than a chaste kiss on her!

As the two dance around each other, both weary of getting involved (for Brady it is because he has had too many one night stands and wants to be friends first; for Lily, he won't fit into the family portrait that she someday sees on daddy's desk), it becomes harder to stay away. When her friend Megan decides to fix Brady up with a fellow girlfriend, Lily has to ask herself why this bothers her. When Gerald suddenly has to leave for a business trip that will take several months, will Brady finally capture is landlady's heart? Or will Doug continue to reign supreme and steal all his shoes.

Fox's latest romantic comedy is a gem. The dialogue is crisp, the romance sizzling, and the novel decision to give a voice to possessive Doug was ingenious. His interactions with humans are hysterical, particularly his psychological games to outwit Brady (who won't be outsmarted by the ugliest dog in the world). It's a cute and funny story that you can't help but like, as there is never a dull moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great funny and fast read ..., September 5, 2007
This review is from: Beware of Doug (Mass Market Paperback)
The first book to this series was enjoyable, Guy and Dogs, but this second part was even better. I laughed out loud several times during this book and it kept me interested and entertained throughout. At no point did the book get boring for me. The scenes in Doug's perspective, Lily's beloved dog, were hilarious and very unique!! This is what made this book 5 stars for me. I really have to say I enjoyed this book so much that I hated for it to end. If you are looking for a fun feel good type of romance novel, you have found it - but BEWARE, you won't be able to stop giggling through this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A doggie romance, April 3, 2007
This review is from: Beware of Doug (Mass Market Paperback)
I really loved this book. The characters are great, especially literary Lily and her fantasies about Jane Austen's Emma. And Doug the dog and his antics are hysterical. I especially enjoyed how Elaine Fox used Doug as a character by using scenes in the dog's point of view - very original and interesting. Yeah, I'm a sucker for dog books, but this one was good no matter what.
