Biography

Visiter by San Francisco band The Dodos is their second full length and first for Frenchkiss. Originally formed in 2006 under the moniker Dodobird as a one man acoustic act, Meric Long would gig around SF playing folky guitar w/ a combination of loops and ambient keyboards. Having already studied West African Ewe drumming, Meric got turned onto country blues fingerpicking and sought to create a… Read more in Amazon's The Dodos Store

Editorial Reviews

Beware of the Maniacs is The Dodos first recording, selfreleased July 2006 recorded at Type Foundry Studios in Portland, Oregon with John Askew. Following the release The Dodos set out on a rigorous touring schedule that would carry through their sophomore release Visiter released by French Kiss Records (North America) March 2007 and July 2007 release by Wichita Records (rest of the world). The Dodos sound is shaped by the marriage of two periods in songwriter Meric Long's musical history: playing in rock/metal bands growing up in the suburbs, and playing and listening to old delta blues records in his post adolescent years. Meric began playing with Logan Kroeber in the fall of 2005, whose background in Santa Cruz heavy metal band Entragian made for a perfect fit and also added percussionist Joe Haener (Gris Gris) in March 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as Visiter, but still excellent, July 15, 2008

If you're reading this review and haven't heard their great 2008 release, go check that out first. If you already have Visiter and love it as you should, definitely pick this up. It doesn't reach quite the same heights but comes pretty close.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your average neo-folk album, April 25, 2009

The Dodos blend guitars (accoustic or slightly electrified most of the time but they're not averse to the occasional psych-trance riffalama) and percussion (bit euro-folk, bit batucada, bit african) with finely sung tunes on top. I like them. A lot. The formula is perhaps of better effect on their second LP but this album does the trick too.

3.0 out of 5 stars A hint of things to come, October 3, 2010

This review is from: Beware of the Maniacs (Audio CD)
This a good starter album, but I would say visiter is there opus. This album is the sound of a band trying to find themselves. good but not great. Oh and if anybody has a problem with my review, please talk about the review and not my grammatical errors.
