5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
A delightful, lush, romantic CD ideal for late night or rainy day listening (or anytime). Fine song selection and arrangements (especially the strings and Toots Thielmann on harmonica), soft, expressive vocals. A gem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lush Arrangements
I don't have the foggiest notion who this woman is or how I came across this album in the first place. But, while this CD is not a flawless gem, it does feature at least two very strong numbers.

Fygi does a nice turn in the old 1931 chestnut "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" to open things up. And then she goes on to do a phenomenal job in the 1934 standard "I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Laura Fygi is exquisite., June 3, 2000

I had never heard of this singer until a year ago when I was shopping around for a recording of "How Insensitive" which appears on Laura's "The Lady Wants To Know" CD (another winner). Now I am hooked. "Bewitched" is a little more varied than some of her other collections, covering jazz, standards, and pop. Unlike a lot of other jazz female vocalists, LF has the distinction of really being able to SING a song, in a unique voice that is as bewitching as her material. True standouts here are "It's Crazy", a melody she will imprint in your head like glue; a dreamily lonesome version of "Good Morning Heartache", and a surprising, lyrical, slowed-down version of "Just One of Those Things". Fygi is also surrounded by impeccably smart arrangers, and musicians talented enough to ALMOST steal the show. Something about all of Laura Fygi's music makes me feel like I've been transported to an exotic, romantic beach. Buy it, listen, and you'll be sitting next to me drinking Margueritas. Why isn't this woman a BIG star in the U.S.? I'll never know...

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is absolutely fine soft jazz, and Fygi is refreshing, February 15, 1999

I was kid in the days of jazz, the big bands, and the great combos like the Benny Goodman quartet. I first heard Laura on a local Utah all-music station and it was so fine to hear real muscians perform that I immediately called the station to learn who was this artist. This is really good "stuff". Obviously not everyone senses the quality of this group, nor the return of a real vocalist for the usual "music" fare leaves much to be desired. It was like nostalgia for me. I thank you, Laura Fygi. Thanks a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Smoother Jazz Available, February 6, 2008
This review is from: Bewitched (Audio CD)
Unparalleled smoothness from a very talented singer, regardless of the version of the release - and there are apparently several out there. I have two - one released on Verve Forecast, 1993, called "Bewitched" (a USA version), and one entitled "Introducing Laura Fygi" on Mercury, 1991 (apparently a European version). Both have the same cover photo of Laura, but do not share the back photo. The Verve release contains 12 tracks, the Mercury 15 tracks, but between the two, only share 5 of the same songs - Dream a Little Dream, Willow Weep For Me, Good Morning Heartache, Girl Talk, and Just One Of Those Things. From all indications "Bewitched" is more than likely an outtake of the original Ruud Jacobs produced 1991 Mercury sessions, tailored for USA release - even the photos look as if they could have been shot at the same time - that's my opinion, anyway.

Regardless of its origins, "Bewitched" is absolutely sublime if what you seek is really smooth jazz. Including such stellar jazz greats as Toots Thielemans, Johnny Griffin, and Clark Terry, every song has that timeless quality of "cool" - the convincing sense that each musician is tracking the mood in unison, perfectly creating an effortless flow that has enough improvisation to stay interesting, but enough restraint to stay centered on Laura's exquisite voice. Too many standouts to list, it is truly a great tribute to Laura that she can take songs that have been done repeatedly over the years and deliver each with a fresh sense of discovery. This is one disc that true vocal jazz lovers will not want to miss.

Quality rendering of wonderful classics. She showcases a level of quality in voice and styling seldom seen in today's artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, One of the BEST CD's I own!, January 25, 2000

I was given one of Fygi's CD's for my birthday a few years ago by a friend who is a DJ for a Jazz station. What a fabulous gift! I have been a Fygi fan ever since. Not a week goes by that I don't listen to this CD. I have hundreds of vocal CD's and this is one of my all time favorite, top ten! I fall in love every time I hear her sing "I Only Have Eyes For You".
