4.0 out of 5 stars A fun collection of whimsical stories!, October 16, 2005
This review is from: Bewitched (Paperback)
Saving Sirena by Susan Krinard has an "I Dream of Jeannie" feel to it. When conservative stiff-shirt Jack rescues an alley cat, he breaks a spell that releases a sexy witch Sirena, who then uses sweetly silly antics to loosen him up and bring fun into his life, as they each find a way into the other's heart.

In Everything She Does is Magick by Maggie Shayne, Aurora is an excellent physician with a magical healing touch. From the time she is an infant, the three eccentric aunts who raised her determine that it's Aurora's destiny to marry Nathan, who must remain a virgin until then. Problem is that the two have never gotten along. The aunts go to great, and sometimes ridiculous lengths to prevent Nathan from giving himself to another woman before Aurora and he learn that emotions as strong as hate are really love in disguise, and that they wouldn't hurt and bother each other so much if they didn't truly care about the other.

To mend a Spell by Lisa Higdon is my favorite story in the collection. Laura, orphaned as a young girl, was raised as her dressmaker Grandmother's apprentice in Salem, Massachusetts. While searching for fabric in their attic, Laura stumbles upon an old keepsake chest. Curiosity gets the best of her, so she breaks the lock. Inside, she finds a Spell Book that belonged to one of her ancesters. She reads the book with a degree of scepticsm, but when things start to go wrong for a sea caption she recently met, she begins to believe in the magic. Using the spells to reverse the bad luck with befell the captain bewitches them both, drawing them closer together romantically.

A Spell of Mist and Roses by Amy Elizabeth Saunders started off with great promise and admiration for the hero, when Kit was banished by the King for standing up for his principles. Once he arrives at the dilapidated castle, he turns very unlikable in his arrogance over the lack of amenities and servants. Only Isabelle, a young herbalist, can change his situation and attitude by declaring that the spell on the castle will be broken if Kit serves the townspeople. Through hard work, kindness and compassion, he gains the respect of the people and of the reader, and finds his niche in the community and in Isabella's heart.

This is a collection of four romantic tales with a magical twist. My favourites were Saving Sirena,in which a lonely man finds a cat in the street, only to discover the cat is really a young witch who had a spell cast on her to remain a cat, unless she could find someone to fall in love with her without the aid of her magic;and Everything She Does Is Magick,in which a young girl is destined to have a child with a certain boy she just happens to love, but he does not feel the same,so it is up to her aunts to make sure he does...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read and "purrfect" for the season, October 24, 1997

As a small rural librarian, I must spend our library's dollars very carefully. I always buy Susan Krinard's books as I know they tell a good story and circulate well. This short story is a wonderful fantasy and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little magic in their life.
