My IEM's were dying, so I had to buy something new. My budget was more expandable this time around since my birthday was upon me, so I did my research and came across the Beyerdynamic headphones. I borrowed a pair of DT 990's from a friend (lucky he had them) to try them out, and while I didn't hate them I thought the bass and treble were much too emphasized. Seeing that the DT 880's had a more neutral sound, I figured they would be much better-suited to my tastes (I ended up ordering the 32 OHM edition, considering I didn't want to have to fork over the extra cash for an amplifier).
Upon their arrival, I very eagerly plugged them into my iPhone and began cycling through my various genres of music. I was simply blown away by the sound I was hearing. No matter the genre, the 880's managed to pull it off flawlessly and with a clarity and accuracy I'd never previously known. The low frequencies are very controlled and just right in proportion, the mid frequencies are clear, and the high frequencies, though there is a very slight boost in the upper regions, are crisp and extremely detailed. The soundstage is also exceptionally wide and spacious. I'd describe the sound as being very natural and fit for analytic needs.
As of now, the only slight annoyance I have with the headphones is the sound bleeding, but this is to be expected from headphones with an open design (though they are listed as semi-open, I've noticed virtually no difference between the 990's and the 880's as far as the sound bleeding goes).Read more ›
Now, the DT 880's themselves are wonderful. Take note though, that you will NEED an amp to get adequate sound out of these headphones. I tried them before I had an amp and came away disappointed, they were clear, but they felt as if the sound stage was small and they had no impact. I now have them paired with a Little Dot MK III tube amp and together, the sound can be breathtaking. The clarity of the sound is outstanding and it is so full, and it really hits you - you can't help but close your eyes and enjoy the sound; it's hard to be productive with sound this good so don't plan on working with them on. Before this setup I was using fairly decent mid grade stuff, and these have mids like I have never known. Many of the songs that I am intimately familiar with have details that I have never even come close to hearing, it really adds another dimension to music. The highs are easy to handle, and not piercing - I can listen for many hours without any ear discomfort.
The bass is definitely there, and it is extremely crisp, however it does not really thump hard. I would describe it as accurate, but subtle... Personally I could use a touch more bass, but with that said, it does not detract from the sound quality what so ever - the bass is quite present and definitely enjoyable. If you are looking for something to give you some extra boom on top of what your input is sending, look elsewhere. If you want a great balanced, neutral and pleasing sound, look no further.
I also use these for gaming as well, and they work great with Call of Duty, they feel extremely precise and locating sounds is extremely easy.Read more ›
These Beyer DT-880 Pro present a very nice listening experience.
They offer supreme clarity, refined detail, and abundant dynamics.
Sound wise they are slightly (treble) extended past a neutral overall sound as they are engineered with a slightly tweeked/punched upper treble (above 5K) that adds a real clarity to their presentation.
I would describe their tonality as very clean and precise with average mids.
As you listen you notice a good general balance of the frequencies, very detailed and articulate.
Their sound presentation offers you the ability to look inside the music.
They are easy to drive and extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of listening.
A very good overall value for the money.
There are purchases in our life-time that may have a one time gratification or are faddish and where great for a while -- things we spend hundreds on and put into a box which never gets opened; the ability to listen to music of this clarity, however, are truly soul changing. How do you put a price on your ability to connect with what you love?
For these to be run properly, I bought an external Sound Blaster HD DAC, a JDS labs cMoy modified with a 4000uF capacitor and an LME49860NA Op-Amp which is run by 24V 1Amp -- my life has never been the same...
I'm no expert, but my ears tell me I'm hearing everything, and if I listen very closely, I often hear more! Its there, its ALL there!
The headphones are extremely comfortable. Even with prolonged wear, they will not give you a headache like many headphones do. These cans don't grab your head tightly, they don't grind in the top of your head, they are VERY lite, the large ear-pads are roomy enough to fit anyone's ears and are very soft. In all seriousness, it doesn't even feel like you're wearing them.
There are three things I dislike about these however...
1. They are VERY open. You can hear sound outside the headphones very clearly.
2. 600ohms isn't an easy thing to drive. I may only be using a cMoy, but its pumping out a full amp of power and sometimes its still too quiet.Read more ›

They are very nice headphones. Just not to my taste in terms of bass (and my taste for bass is not extreme). Very detailed, and very clear just not my preference for signature. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Ariel D. Weisberg
