Beyerdynamic A200p Portable Mobile DAC Headphone Amp for iPhone and Android Phones, Black/Silver

The portable A200p DAC/headphone amplifier can be connected to smartphones, tablets or computers for producing and amplifying a detailed digital audio signal without loss. The integrated Wolfson WM8740 digital/analogue converter with a sample rate of 96 kHz/24 bit ensures the finest resolution and outstanding sound quality. The A 200 p supports iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini and iPod touch 5th generation and most smartphones with Android 4.1 or higher, which have a digital USB audio output. In order to charge the integrated rechargeable battery the A 200 p is connected via USB to a USB charger or computer where it is possible to listen to the music while charging over the computer. The maximum operating time of a fully charged battery is 11 hours. With the fine volume control made of aluminium the volume can digitally be set in 135 steps. An integrated software-controlled volume limit according to EN 50332-2 avoids hearing damage when listening over longer periods. With the lock function of the on-off switch the selected volume cannot accidentally be changed when the A 200 p is put into a trouser or jacket pocket. The supplied leather case also allows the A 200 p to be worn on a belt or attaching to a smartphone.

Features : Crystal-clear sound with portable players Volume control in 135 steps Volume limit according to EN 50332-2 LED to display power, volume and charging 3 buttons for playback/pause, previous title and next title On-off switch with lock Wolfson WM8740 DAC with 24 bit resolution at a sample frequency of 96 kHz Integrated rechargeable battery with an operating time of 11 hrs Transforming the digital sound data to a connected player often leads to a loss of music quality. Many top headphones such as the beyerdynamic T 51 p cannot be used to their full potential with mobile devices. The A 200 p from beyerdynamic is a solution to this problem. It meets demanding audio requirements and provides you with significantly improved sound on-the-go. HI-FI Experience Instead Of Standard Sound The A 200 p circumvents the internal signal processing of the connected player and receives the pure digital music data first. After converting the digital data to analogue music signals, a high-quality amplifier controls the output to the connected headphones. All of this results in a level of audio quality that was previously not possible for travelling audiophiles. Previously unheard details, better contoured and deeper bass, as well as natural instrument and vocal reproduction transform standard portable sound into a true hi-fi experience. Lightweight And Compact In a Pocket-Format With dimensions of 55 x 55 x 13 mm, the A 200 p is extremely compact and lightweight. It fits easily in your pocket and can be stored together in your headphones carrying case. The integrated battery provides you with up to 11 hours of uninterrupted listening pleasure; enough even for long-haul flights. In addition, the A 200 p also makes it easier for you to control playback using its buttons for play/pause, as well as for skipping between tracks. You can easily adjust the volume using the large aluminium volume knob with locking function. Furthermore, the A 200 p comes with a leather case that you can use to attach the amplifier to your belt or directly to your smartphone. Compatible With Apple and Android The A 200 p works with a number of mobile playback devices such as the iPhone, iPod, iPad via Lightning connector, Android smartphones or tablets provided with digital USB audio output with Android 4.1 or higher via Micro-USB, as well as Mac and Windows computer via USB (please refer to the compatibility list below or under "downloads"). The A 200 p is currently the smallest mobile DAC and amplifier that can work with all of these devices on the digital level.

For anybody who is serious about sound quality and invested into audiophile headphones, you know that DAC and amplifier are among the essential pieces of your audio chain. Also, you would know how expensive this equipment cost and how much space it will occupy. So what are you supposed to do if you want to enjoy your 300 ohm headphones with your smartphone? Or maybe you want to stream Netflix on your laptop and surround yourself with hi-fi sound? There is a number of portable solutions available to help you with this task, but NONE of them will come even close to a small size of Beyerdynamic A200p portable USB DAC/amp. I just had an opportunity to test A200p, and here is what I found.

Arrived in a very compact box, a size similar to Beyerdynamic in-ear headphones (MMX102ie and DX160ie) I recently reviewed, I actually expected this DAC to barely fit inside. There was plenty of info on the front and the back of the box, but no typical magnetic cover to reveal the actual product. I have a feeling Beyer guys did that intentionally to make a surprise even sweeter once you take A200p out of the box. When I say small, that wouldn't be even accurate. It's TINY, with a matchbox dimension of approximately 55mm x 55mm x 13mm and only 51g. It's hard to even believe that such a small footprint can host a powerful audiophile quality Wolfson WM8740 DAC (24bit/96kHz), an integrated rechargeable battery able to last up to 11hr, a capability to be connected to either Android or Apple smartphones or your laptop or computer, a set of Play/Pause and Skip song transport controls, a dedicated Power/Lock switch and a status LED indicator, and a large flush mounted volume control wheel covering the whole top of the device.

This is an excellent DAC/amp.
Compact and easy to use.
Mine, however, died suddenly after a few hours use and could not be revived.
The seller is refunding my money, which I will use to buy another.
Probably a fluke.
Really does make a difference in the sound from an iPod touch (the only iPod that it works with-I checked with Beyredynamic))
Found that out when I had to listen to the iPod without the DAC.

Package Type: Standard Packaging
Pros: Portable Size; 135 Volume Steps; Low Output Impedance (1.1 Ω); Silent Background
Cons: External Buttons Too Sensitive; Recessed micro USB Port

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Beyerdynamic for loaning me the A200p for review.

The Beyerdynamic A200p is a very small DAC/Amp combo for portable use with computers, iPads, iPhones, and Android phones.

The device itself is 55×55×13 mm and the included leather case with belt strap adds minimal bulk. It features and on/off/lock switch, headphone out, play/pause/forward/reverse side buttons, micro USB connection, and a very large rotating volume wheel (more on this later).

While the USB connection is a standard micro-B type, it is recessed and compatibility with generic cables seems improbable, so you may be limited to the included proprietary cables, which includes one long cable for computer use, and two shorter cables for iDevice and Android usage. Beyerdynamic does sell replacement cables.

Other features include a Wolfson WM8740 DAC chip, volume control of 135 steps, and an estimated 11 hour play time. Output impedance is an importantly small 1.1 Ω and outputs 1.7 Vrms in the USA version.

Both the USA and EU versions default to being volume limited (to 150 mVrms, in accordance with EU-50332-2) but the USA version allows for volume limit override by holding down the play button for a few seconds. Once the volume limit is removed, the A200prestarts the volume at its lowest setting as protection feature.

MSRP is $299 USD, which makes it one of the more affordable DAC/Amp combos able to play with most portable devices.

Very nice little package with excellent sound. Works fine with Galaxy Note 4.

Instructions minimal but needed. Even the OFF/ON switch works in a sensible, but non-obvious, way which is not at all clear from the minimal quick start guide supplied. Once you figure it out, it all works the way it is supposed to.

Puzzle: is it worth it? Sound is very good, but so is the raw sound from the Note 4. Maybe the phone DAC/amp chips are getting much better these days. So it all depends on how good your built-in DAC/amp is. I can talk myself into hearing an improvement, but it isn't large. You will have to decide for yourself.

I've only had this for about a week, but I love it! I use Klipsch X10's on the road and Grado 325i's at home.
I connect it to both my Macbook at home and my iPhone 5 on the road. It's a little cumbersome hooking it up initially but the sound is so worth it. Even if you don't listen to hi-res music it's worth the price of admission for how it makes your lossless files sound versus the normal headphone output on your Apple device.
I listen to both FLAC and Apple Lossless files.
I just bought a 30-pin to micro-USB adapter to see if I can get it to work with my iPod Nano.
Highly recommended for home and mobile use.
