Very comfortable and sound great.

Just a centimeter looser and these things sound like they're worth twice as much as I paid.

The COP renders the bass with good detail and the voices sound very natural.

This is my video review from the MKBHD YouTube Channel.

The price/performance ratio is pretty sweet with this pair of cans. The removable audio cable is a nice touch, and the customization options available are awesome. But the killer feature is the adjustable bass port, and that's what really makes these stand out. Worth checking out, for sure!

Enjoy the video!

Every Christmas I go shopping for a new mid-priced pair of headphones for myself, and the Teutonic Trio of headphone makers (Sennheiser, AKG, and Beyerdynamics) are where I look first. So far this season, the Germanic headphone market was shaping up to be a grim one. Sennheiser's newest offering, the Momentum, was an undistinguished and overpriced B&W P5 clone. AKG's long-awaited K550s had sound and isolation issues due to sloppy fit, and appeared to have been utterly misrepresented as being suitable for portable device use. Would the Beyer Custom One Pros (hereafter COP) redeem the Teutonic national reputation for the Christmas 2012 season?

Generally, yes. The COP experience began with a chuckle as the packaging features someone's conception of a DJ, and the featured gentleman looks rather like a Goth Pirate, complete with scraggly facial hair and a leather head wrap that appears to be covering his ears. (That's him on the Amazon Product Page...) I am pleased to report that one does not have to cover over one's ears when listening to the COPs, but the marketing image shows where Beyer is trying to go with the COPs: mainly to VModa Land...

Beyer apparently has been casting a covetous corporate eye at VModa's market share of hipsters seeking customizable headphones, and the COP is an effort to muscle in on the configurable headphone market, a la the VModa M80s. Like Grandpa going to a rave though, Beyer is a bit out of tune with the flow, and so the COPs customizable nature is rather poorly developed. The COPs have removable driver shell plates, but the stock ones that come with the phones are battleship gray and appear about as hip and modern as denim overalls.

I got these headphones yesterday with very little burn in and these headphones do deliver very agile sound. It's also great that these come with a removable cable that makes it easier to replace a broken cable. With their adjustable sound switch on both sides of the headphones, you can hear what a song would sound like when played through a flat sounding headphone(Sennheiser HD600), a fun sounding headphone(Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro with slightly more bass impact and texture), and everything in between (Grado Sr225i). The headphones I'm giving an example of are the best way of describing the sound switch outputs. Also because of the sound switch feature, I can listen to any genre with these headphones at any given time and it helps since I listen to every genre there is. They sound incredibly crisp through all sound signatures, even the bass heavy mode which has enough bass to fight on par with a Beats By Dre Studio, but more crisp and better extension in that bass. The midrange and treble seem to not be affected by the bass much if at all which is saying alot because most bass heavy headphones drown out midrange and somewhat treble. Fear not, you won't have that problem with these. These also isolate pretty well and do NOT leak sound out of the headphones unless you max out your volume on an Ipod or something more powerful in volume output. The comfort is unbeatable being light weight and having soft pleather ear cushions as well as a comfortable and typical Beyerdynamic headband. You will pretty much forget you have them on. They are also built like a tank and customizable in appearance, so anyone who wants to be stylish and truly have great audio at the same time, do yourself a favor and get these headphones. They are worth their full retail price. Note that customization accessories are sold separately. I can't wait to fully burn them in.

I had been researching between these COPs, the ATH-M50s and the DT770s when I decided to go with the COPs.

In terms of my particular taste in music, I'm predominantly listening to electronic music (purchased in conjunction with the release of Andrew Bayer's album If It Were You, We'd Never Leave as well as DP's Random Access Memories.)

These headphones sound phenomenal, I'm not one of these self proclaimed audiophiles; just a passionate listener looking for high quality build materials, crystal clear mids/highs and nice, powerful, deep bass to elevate my listening experience. The COPs satisfy and exceed all of those factors for me.

If you're on the fence and you want the renowned sound quality of the ATH-M50s with a more powerful, deeper bass response, pull the trigger on these.

I have a to change all my prior headphone review because of this one. Check out the measurements at headphone dot com, golden ears, and inner fidelity. This is bar none the most neutral headphone set I've ever used--just a bit better than the Shure SRH840. Goes well with your PMP/iPod as well. Utterly no need for an amp. Bass is DEEP and balanced in the "2" or "3" position. For someone using these in the studio, they have good isolation and will minimize bleed for tracking in the "1" position. Very cool features!! "4" is essentially for someone who wants a pair of beats by Dr. Dre I think. Useless to me, but I can understand that people like a ton off bass or whatever. These will do it.

The replaceable cord is a big plus IMO, not to mention the possibility of modifying the looks with all the replaceable parts. The serious about sound and yet fashion conscious will love this for that reason. Now these headphones are not the prettiest I've seen or anything--they look like they are meant for business and feel like it. Built like a tank! Thank goodness they are not heavy either. Maybe not up to the German Maestro GMP 8.35 or 8.300 as far as ruggedness goes, but the same or better than the prior generation of Beyer's--the DT770,880, and 990. Certainly among the very best.

These don't sound enveloping or spacious like open cans, but it's impossible for closed cans to do so--not an opinion. The sound is similar tonally to the Shure SRH840 but with more deep bass--significantly more--and more separation between notes/instruments. They also feel better built then the Shure.

For an iPad or iPod recording scenario, these have to be unbeatable. The low impedance will get loud straight from the headphone out.
