CUSTOM ONE PRO

Every day is different, and so is every genre of music. Sometimes you want driving beats to provide your day with rhythm, other times you need quiet sounds to help you relax and unwind--at home or on the go, in loud or in quiet environments. The requirements often change hour to hour. beyerdynamic, the audio specialist from Heilbronn, Germany, has developed the perfect headphone for this kind of flexible lifestyle: Custom One Pro lets you listen to music interactively.

Turn headphones into a headset in seconds, for use with portable or professional devices. View larger

beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Headphones
The variable noise reduction system isolates ambient noise from the environment

The Custom One Pro changes its sound characteristics in the blink of an eye--from clear analytical sound to booming colorful beats and back in less than a second. The style is just as flexible: The style kits, which are available as accessories (sold separately), make it easy to give your headphones a new look with just a few quick movements. You can change your headphone's look at any time, even long after the initial purchase.

Custom Style

The Custom One Pro offers not only personalized sound, but also personalized design. Choose from hundreds of designs and easily change many parts any time (sold separately). The Custom One Pro can be a different headphone every day. But more than this, you can be the designer yourself and create your own personal headphone.

Plus, the rings, covers and cushions on the ear pads are interchangeable, as is the cushioned headband--the user can switch the parts easily by hand in just a few simple moves.

Custom Sound Slider

The Custom sound slider is your tool for maximum listening customization. Flexible bass reflex vents on the earcups change the headphones' sound characteristic in four stages. When the vents are closed, they keep the transducer membranes under strict control, which produces a streamlined, analytical sound. However, with every notch on the slider, the Custom One Pro adds another layer of bass until the wearer can literally feel the air pumping out of the headphones thanks to the ultra-light velocity transducer.

The result is thundering bass of unimaginable proportions, primarily because there is no equalizer in the amplifier to manipulate the frequency. The Custom One Pro delivers this powerful sound on its own, without difficulty and without distortion. The throbbing beat machine can just as quickly be turned into sophisticated headphones for your home stereo system. Or a control monitor for listening in on a jam session in your rehearsal space. Perfectly in-tune with every mood and every musical genre--this is the result of beyerdynamic's decades of experience as a studio and stage audio equipment supplier.

Custom Noise Isolation

A side effect of the innovative sound slider is that it transforms the Custom One Pro incrementally from an open to a closed headphone. Noise pollution, such as droning airplane engines or street noise, is kept out and is no longer a source of irritation. Moreover, this noise isolation feature is much more pleasant than electronic noise-cancellation. There is no uncomfortable feeling of pressure against your ears and the headphones do not require additional batteries.

Professional 16-Ohm Drivers: Powerful Sound for Every Application

The newly developed 16-ohm drivers from beyerdynamic's professional line of accessories ensure a high degree of efficiency and a maximum volume of 116 decibels. The membranes are some of the lightest in the world and transform the power of the neodymium magnets into pure sound without distortion. Inefficient mobile devices such as smartphones or MP3 players can now play in peak form, while this powerful driver teases the finest details out of your stereo system at home.

Detachable Cables & Headset

This package includes a detachable pro-cable. Other cables are optional. Moreover, Custom One Pro headphones can be turned into a professional headset in seconds, making it the perfect all-in-one solution for phone calls, gaming or recording podcasts/videos.

Made in Germany

Custom One Pro is handcrafted in Germany using only the best components available. Flexible metal headband, ultra stiff metal forks and as always with beyerdynamic: you can replace virtually every part even years after purchase.

This is my video review from the MKBHD YouTube Channel.

The price/performance ratio is pretty sweet with this pair of cans. The removable audio cable is a nice touch, and the customization options available are awesome. But the killer feature is the adjustable bass port, and that's what really makes these stand out. Worth checking out, for sure!

Enjoy the video!

Every Christmas I go shopping for a new mid-priced pair of headphones for myself, and the Teutonic Trio of headphone makers (Sennheiser, AKG, and Beyerdynamics) are where I look first. So far this season, the Germanic headphone market was shaping up to be a grim one. Sennheiser's newest offering, the Momentum, was an undistinguished and overpriced B&W P5 clone. AKG's long-awaited K550s had sound and isolation issues due to sloppy fit, and appeared to have been utterly misrepresented as being suitable for portable device use. Would the Beyer Custom One Pros (hereafter COP) redeem the Teutonic national reputation for the Christmas 2012 season?

Generally, yes. The COP experience began with a chuckle as the packaging features someone's conception of a DJ, and the featured gentleman looks rather like a Goth Pirate, complete with scraggly facial hair and a leather head wrap that appears to be covering his ears. (That's him on the Amazon Product Page...) I am pleased to report that one does not have to cover over one's ears when listening to the COPs, but the marketing image shows where Beyer is trying to go with the COPs: mainly to VModa Land...

Beyer apparently has been casting a covetous corporate eye at VModa's market share of hipsters seeking customizable headphones, and the COP is an effort to muscle in on the configurable headphone market, a la the VModa M80s. Like Grandpa going to a rave though, Beyer is a bit out of tune with the flow, and so the COPs customizable nature is rather poorly developed. The COPs have removable driver shell plates, but the stock ones that come with the phones are battleship gray and appear about as hip and modern as denim overalls.

I got these headphones yesterday with very little burn in and these headphones do deliver very agile sound. It's also great that these come with a removable cable that makes it easier to replace a broken cable. With their adjustable sound switch on both sides of the headphones, you can hear what a song would sound like when played through a flat sounding headphone(Sennheiser HD600), a fun sounding headphone(Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro with slightly more bass impact and texture), and everything in between (Grado Sr225i). The headphones I'm giving an example of are the best way of describing the sound switch outputs. Also because of the sound switch feature, I can listen to any genre with these headphones at any given time and it helps since I listen to every genre there is. They sound incredibly crisp through all sound signatures, even the bass heavy mode which has enough bass to fight on par with a Beats By Dre Studio, but more crisp and better extension in that bass. The midrange and treble seem to not be affected by the bass much if at all which is saying alot because most bass heavy headphones drown out midrange and somewhat treble. Fear not, you won't have that problem with these. These also isolate pretty well and do NOT leak sound out of the headphones unless you max out your volume on an Ipod or something more powerful in volume output. The comfort is unbeatable being light weight and having soft pleather ear cushions as well as a comfortable and typical Beyerdynamic headband. You will pretty much forget you have them on. They are also built like a tank and customizable in appearance, so anyone who wants to be stylish and truly have great audio at the same time, do yourself a favor and get these headphones. They are worth their full retail price. Note that customization accessories are sold separately. I can't wait to fully burn them in.

These headphones are great!! Very well made and surprisingly lightweight and comfortable! Excellent clarity and I heard all these sounds I have never heard before in songs that I have listened to hundreds of times. The mids are very clear and the highs are great and not annoying. The bass... Very tight and clean. I've ran the bass testers on YouTube and blasted the volume and ZERO distortion! I did the same on the Bose QC3 and it sounded like a bad fart on the distortion. The adjustable bass is great because there are days I just want that deep thumping surrounding my head and sometimes I want it toned down a little to appreciate the lows and highs more. I normally put it on the 2nd or 3rd position. The 1st is a little too light and the 4th is too much for me on most of the music I listen to.

Comparison to DT1350, the DT 1350 has more clarity but not by a whole lot. Bass-wise, these COPs are more flexible and fun. The DT 1350 is also lacking a changeable cord so I couldn't stop/start/skip with a button.

Comparison to the V-Moda M100s, the M100 are bass heavy and fits more snug. Sound quality is just as great but I found that if I move the COP to the 2nd to the highest bass setting, it's equal and sometimes better than the M100s. On the highest bass setting on the COPs, it's stronger than the M100s and does not mess up the mids and highs as if you use a headphone amp. Everything remains clear!!!

My only disappointment is the lack of accessories for the COPs. Not a lot of plate collection (I just reversed the one that comes with it which is this brushed stainless steel look), no coiled cable or microphone.

Suggestions: although the pleather earpads feel fine, I wanted something softer so I got the velour pads for the 770s.
