Product Description

As a closed-style headphone, the beyerdynamic DT 660 attenuates ambient noise so effectively that outside distractions are almost completely blocked out. As a result, wearers can enjoy their favorite music in noisy surroundings such as city buses or noisy cafes. More importantly, the DT 660's extremely strong neodymium magnet system offers a detailed audio reproduction and powerful bass response, making it suitable for soul, funk, hip-hop, house, rock, techno, and more. The headphones also offer computer-calculated 90-degree swiveling ear cups for precision sound, along with a rugged headband and soft replaceable ear pads for all-day comfort. And as a bonus, the headphones fold up into a compact footprint, making them easy to store and transport. Other details include 32-ohm impedance, a single-sided 3-meter connecting cable, a gold-plated 1/8-inch stereo jack plug, and a 1/4-inch adapter. The DT 660s, which weigh 12.3 ounces, carry a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

From the Manufacturer

The DT 660 is a closed headphone that attenuates ambient noise effectively--and no sound from the headphone will leak, interrupting those around you. It's a great way for the audiophile to create their own private listening experience. The DT 660 features a sophisticated sound with a detailed reproduction of the deepest bass and brilliant highs. The 90 degree swiveling ear-cups and softer yet sturdy materials for the headband and the ear pads ensure outstanding levels of comfort. The fold-away design makes it easy to store and transport.

The beyerdynamic DT 660 Headphones
Featuring a closed-back design for private listening in public environments
Closed Design for Increased Noise Isolation with Swiveling Earcups

The DT 660 features a closed-back design for private listening in public environments. Ideal for portable devices, the DT 660 delivers the German quality of an audiophile headphone that's just as good for your media player, music-playing smartphone, or laptop as it is for virtual surround sound listening on your demanding home stereo equipment. Anywhere you need high-resolution audio performance, the DT 660 delivers with immersive, isolated sound and wearable comfort.

The beyerdynamic DT 660 Headphones
Easily folds into a compact form to carry in your backpack, suitcase, or bag

The ultra-soft earcups are ideal for extended periods of wear, so you can enjoy an entire concert (or two) in complete comfort. An adjustable headband lets you achieve the perfect fit, and the earcups swivel a full 90 degrees for listening and positioning convenience.

Dynamic Transducer for Increased Fidelity and Performance

Without exception, beyerdynamic manufactures the dynamic transducer systems that go into their headphones in-house. From the magnet and diaphragm to the careful wiring and circuitry, beyerdynamic controls quality at all levels of manufacturing, ensuring superior engineering in their headphones down to the smallest detail.

An extremely strong neodymium magnet system offers the DT 660 highly detailed sound reproduction quality, is mechanically very robust, and needs only a small amount of operating voltage which increases efficiency. This increased efficiency also leaves the DT 660 with greater power reserves for dynamic, undistorted sound that especially compensates well for low-spec mobile devices such as portable media players that often can't perform at the same level as dedicated home equipment. The extremely lightweight 32 Ohm voice coil provides transparency and increased impulse fidelity.

Fold-Away Design

The convenient folding earcup design of the DT 660 helps it take up less space while on the move, easily folding into a compact form to carry in your backpack, suitcase, or bag.

Well, let me start by saying that I was choosing between two sets of cans. It was either the Sennheiser HD280 or the Beyerdynamic DT660s that which I purchased. With that said, if I had a set of HD280's to demo, I could have possibly chose those, else I would have been purchasing based only on reviews. But, I actually got to demo the DT660s.

At first listen (out of the box) the DT660s sounded good, but they seemed a little lame in the low frequency department and the mid-range and highs were screaming in comparison. However I read that they require a bit of burn-in prior to them reaching their potential. After the first night and about 14 hours of burn-in, I gave them a listen. Not much difference, but they had woken up a bit and sounded much better. The sound was a bit warmer and the bass was present. I've now clocked about 160 plus hours of burn-in and listening time and the sound is fantastic. I'm very pleased with the progress. The tones are very even with good low frequencies, buttermilk mid-range, and silky highs. They also provide a pretty good soundstage for closed cans. Beyer pulled off the all time caper with that feature. They started out a bit harsh, but now they've settled in pefectly. These headphones aren't for the intense bass seekers in my opinion. They're well balanced and provide an honest presentation, i.e., if it was recorded that way, you'll hear it that way. However, they'll cater more towards the jazz, classical, and acoustic audience in my opinion. They do the bass catered genres (hip-hop, R&B, techno) quite well, but I don't think that is where they shine. I've blessed them with some Wynton Marsalis, Hampton Hawes, Lee Ritenour, and Grover Washington Jr.

This is a truly great closed-back headphone with natural open and airy sound suited perfectly for large orchestras, chamber music, acoustic jazz etc. The isolation is really great both in and out. Compared to similarly priced closed-back ATH-M50 a lot better isolation. DT660 is very easy to drive. It sounds fairly good from an android phone and even better from a computer. The bass is much better when driven by a real headphone amp.

First and foremost, these are not basshead headphones. I think it's unfortunate though that these great headphones have so few reviews in comparison to the DT770's 880's.

I am a jazz/classical/fusiony type of listener. I jam out to the Dave Brubeck and Jimmy Smith pandora stations. I love me some Dave Matthews Band. I'll throw on some quiet Eddie Vedder acoustic albums every now and then. These headphones are AWESOME for these genres of music. It has wonderfully sparkly highs. I haven't heard Jazz played through a better set of headphones.

I'm also a college student who primarily uses these headphones at the library/at home which neither are unfortunately quiet environments. That's why I went with these over the 880's...because I needed some headphones that I could either crank up or keep low without disturbing others and vice versa. They offer tremendous isolation--something you won't get with the 880's. I haven't personally tried the 880's and I'm sure they're wonderful, but I still don't think the 660's sacrifice quality with the isolation being so pertinent. For those who don't follow, generally open headphones (DT880's) offer a much wider soundstage, so when you have closed headphones (DT660's), they generally have a more narrow and direct sound presentation. Those are general terms and don't apply to all headphones but my original point was that the DT660's do a great job of not sacrificing sound quality even though they don't leak sound. Especially if you're listening to the genres of music I listed above.

I recommend these headphones to anybody who needs a good pair of isolated headphones that won't leak too much sound. If you are a hiphop/rap/house person, you may be disappointed by the lack of bass.

Too much has been said about these hugely underrated headphones elesewhere so let me limit my remarks to simplicity...

These are phenomenal heaphones for classical, acoustic, jazz, folk, or celtic genres.

They bring a clarity and presence that is subtle and at times shockingly good.

And - no, they are not really portable headphones. But for desktop or house or home or office applications - they (pardon the uninentional pun) rock. Additionally, they sound excellent with minimal to nonexistent amplification - though I have been using them with an excellent portable amp (the Fiio E10) plugged into my MacBook Pro, so they benefit from some amplification. But unlike other higher impedance headphones, they can truly be driven relatively well without massive amplification. In other words, they pair nicely with iPods.

Phenomenal headphones for people who want to hear the nuances of music.

Sound quality is great. I use these with my Ipod and Sony mp3 Players, I just needed a booster to get the volume I like Now the sound quality is REALLY great.I have several high end headphone sets,Bose,Sennheiser etc. These are studio quality for a great price. For sure well worth the cost.
