Book Description

Giving a sound technical introduction to 3GPP LTE and SAE, this book explains the decisions taken during standardization while also examining the likely competition for LTE such as HSPA+ and WiMAX. As well as looking at next generation network technologies, Beyond 3G - Bringing Networks, Terminals and the Web Together describes the latest mobile device developments, voice and multimedia services and the mobile web 2.0. It considers not only how the systems, devices and software work but also the reasons behind why they are designed in this particular way. How these elements strongly influence each other is discussed as well as how network capabilities, available bandwidth, mobile device capabilities and new application concepts will shape the way we communicate in the future. This book gives an end to end introduction to wireless, from mobile software architecture to core networks, making it a valuable resource for anyone working in the industry.
  • Examines current and next-generation network technologies such as UMTS, HSPA+, WiMAX, LTE and Wifi
  • Analyses and explains performance and capacity in practice as well as future capacity requirements and how they can be fulfilled
  • Introduces the reader to the current cellular telephony architecture and to voice over IP architectures such as SIP, IMS and TISPAN
  • Looks at mobile device hardware and mobile operating system evolution
  • Encompasses all major global wireless standards for application development and the latest state of the mobile web 2.0

More About the Author

One of the first photos of me showing interest in communication technology was taken when I was two years old, playing with a toy phone. Since then, this hasn't changed much except that the toys have become a bit more functional and expensive. My professional interests are still focused around communication, mobile communication networks, multimedia applications, and especially the wireless Internet.

Having graduated from the University of Applied Sciences in Ravensburg / Germany in the middle of the 1990's, I first joined a small startup company which focused on the development of web based telemonitoring devices.

In 2000, my interests led me to Nortel's GSM/UMTS R&D team. Since then, I've held a number of positions in MSC R&D and GPRS engineering. In recent years my project scopes have expanded and I am currently working as a Wireless Solution Consultant.

Some of my free time is dedicated to teaching and book writing and my first English title "Communication Systems for the Mobile Information Society" has been published by John Wiley and Sons in 2006.

Beyond technology and book writing, I like to travel and have developed a great interest in Opera in the past years. I also like reading and have recently discovered my interest in Roman history.

If you wish to get in contact with me, I can be reached via my private eMail address at gsmumts at gmx.de

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book!, April 11, 2010

This review is from: Beyond 3G - Bringing Networks, Terminals and the Web Together: LTE, WiMAX, IMS, 4G Devices and the Mobile Web 2.0 (Hardcover)
I bought this book sometime ago because I thought that the author's previous book was well written, however I never found time to read it thoroughly.

Over past few months, I discovered that I kept going back to the book and the author's blog to look for reference (e.g. to get a better understanding on SIM card, or to calculate spectrum efficiency and cell capacity, etc.). So I decided to bring this book with me on a trip and finally read the whole book (well... almost). I have to say this is another very well written book from the author. The writing is very clear and the figures show up at where they are needed, nothing fancy, dry, or redundant. Just enough text and figures to cover the topic and I never had to re-read a section to understand the subject (like I usually do when reading a 3GPP standard).

What I liked the most about this book is that the selected areas that the author chose to dive into reflected not only his thorough understanding of the standard, but also his obvious hands-on experience. This book was not only well comprehensible, but also practical, an excellent reference to have at your desk for a wireless engineer. I look forward to read future publications from the author, either at his blog or a new book.
