5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard)
This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure
This sems like it could be a great help for someone suffering with anxiety, however it can also be very overwhelming. It is definately not a quick fix. This is more like a study guide, kinda like taking a class. If you need immediate help, I suggest seeing a professional as apposed to buying this book. If you have plenty of time on your hands and your anxiety os already...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard), June 19, 2001

This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desperate to find real help, September 15, 2005

My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject. I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped. Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps learn about yourself and others, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery (Paperback)
I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it. This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.

I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year. A very good therapist recommended this to me. In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it. It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant. Which is what we all want, right?

And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues. I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work. Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pefect if you don't want to be medicated!, October 14, 2007
This review is from: Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery (Paperback)
This book was a dream come true for me. I can't take medication for my anxiety and depression. This book helped me find alternatives that set me on the right path. Now I feel a sense of relief and like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is also a section on finding your life purpose. It's wonderful and really helped me set a plan into action so I can fill that empty space causing me so much anxiety. I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers with mild or moderate anxiety who needs reassurance and help.

This book was very helpful. My psychologist recommended it to help with my counsleing treatment. The author breaks things down for you and makes you realize many things that you can do to live a better, healthier life. It has truly changed my life for the better! I would recommend this to anyone who has anxiety, phobias, even stress.

I , along with his Doctors, am assisting my Husband in overcoming his Anxiety and Panic Disorders. This book has been a blessing for us both. He is getting a first hand look at how his environment and nutrition play a huge part in his recovery.

Since we began following the guidelines in the book, he has had significantly less episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compassionate, comprehensive book on anxiety, March 14, 2009

This review is from: Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. It doesn't provide a quick fix for anxiety, but if you are willing (and desperate enough) to take the time to think through the issues raised and try some of the technique suggested, it can be life-changing.

The author shares his clients' and his own personal experiences in a compassionate, caring way, and I found that healing in itself.
The assumption is that all of us who are dealing with anxiety have a hard time accepting and loving ourselves just as we are. Dr. Bourne provides some powerful tools to start doing just that.

The chapters I found most useful and/or thought-provoking were those on meditation and spirituality, but the whole book is great.
Highly recommended!

Nice book that breaks things down well. It is like a school text book and not a self help read. Give you some other good books to read. If you have mild anxiety I would rec it. Also has a lot of good natural ways to help with anxiety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly "Beyond Anxiety and Phobia...", March 4, 2009
This review is from: Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery (Paperback)
This book is aptly titled, as it truly goes beyond the typical anxiety management techniques. There are many lifestyle and philosophical approaches offered for consideration. The author freely shares his personal experiences and how he himself was helped by these ways. A very good book, even for anyone without anxiety disorders. Kate
