Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- The inside cover of this powerful book reprints the government Gazette of the Republic of South Africa 's statement of the prohibition of photography related to any unrest or resultant damage. These searing photos describe, as words cannot, the anti-apartheid movement. The explanatory text that captions the photographs is terse but thorough, leaving the emotional impact of the images intact. Interspersed throughout the volume are short personal narratives found in court record and files from lawyers and human rights organizations that provide a broader context in which to understand the photos. The final "photograph" is a stark, empty page accompanied by a brief anonymous essay that describes this as the photos untaken as a result of the emergency regulations, a grim comment on life in South Africa. The book includes other reprinted Security Emergency Regulations, and concludes with a powerful historical essay, "Resistance, Reform, and Repression in South Africa in the 1980s," which provides an overview of political activity in that period. Students doing research on human rights, apartheid, or photography, as well as on current events, will appreciate this compendium of chilling images from current world history--images that still need circulation as the South African government considers constitutional change. --Dorcas Hand, formerly at Episcopal High School, Bellaire, TX
