Book Description

June 7, 2000 0750709308 978-0750709309 1
This book sets out to celebrate physical education and sport, and by doing so, encourage the educational establishment to embrace the subject area as a vehicle for the complete development of the individual. In addition, it shows that the benefits of physical activity far outweigh the shallow claims of populous magazines - there are benefits for the individual, the community and for society as a whole. Laker contends that the importance of physical education and sport in many areas of social life has been overlooked at best, and misused at worst. Physical activity has a vast contribution to make, not only as a topic of small talk on a Monday morning, but also to the personal and social development of individuals and possibly to the well-being of the global community as a whole. This book explores the land 'beyond the boundaries of the game.'

Editorial Reviews

Review

Laker presents a far-ranging thesis-- that physical education has an important role to play in constructing society, that is has the potential to help produce socially responsible citizens capable of making thoughtful, rational decisions, and that it can be an agent for the complete development of the individual, if it goes beyond the boundaries of skill aquisition and performance. His work on personal responsibility and citizenship, including spirituality, morality and commmunity involvement, is significant. Overall Laker provides a sound rationale for his thesis, and physical educators are encouraged to accept this new approach. This is a must read for all student and praticing professionals in this field.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is pretty cool!, October 15, 2002
By A Customer
Hi,
My dad wrote this book so please be nice. I know that I am the first person to review this book so here goes nothing! I tried to read the introduction but to be honest, it sent me to sleep. If dad wants to make money why doesn't he write about something interesting like soccer, or fishing? Ah well, I guess you can't win them all!
