Long awaited sequel does not disappoint,
By
This review is from: Beyond The Breakwater (Paperback)
In this sequel to Radclyffe's first published novel Safe Harbor, we catch up with Tory, Reese and Bri two years later. While young lovers Bri and Carre are struggling with their relationship and the demands of adulthood, Tory and Reese are moving on with the next chapter of theirs... having a baby together. This romance has more action than Safe Harbor. There are tough choices for both couples and dangerous events where Reese and Tory both incur risks and possible loss of life and where Bri and Carre risk losing the love they share. With every twist and turn, we hope that love will prevail. Radclyffe's character development is excellent as always. She gets to the point while letting us learn more about each character along the way. Her love scenes are both sensual and erotic, sometimes leaving little to the imagination. This book has more than one hero, but our main hero, Reese, is truly one of a kind. All of us wish we could have a hero like that in our lives. This is a book that you will reread time and again, wishing you were right there.

A Sequel As Good As The First,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond The Breakwater (Paperback)
Take the romantic setting of Provincetown, add a sexy doctor and a gorgeous sheriff and you have the makings of an amazing, passionate, love story. In this sequel to SAFE HARBOR, Radclyffe again takes us into the lives of Reese and Tory and their family and friends. This story is as compelling and well written as the first and just as hot. If not hotter. Radclyffe is the leader in sensual, erotic, sexy love scenes. She boldly goes where other authors fear to go. You will not be disappointed. It's about time there was a fresh approach to lesbian romance and Radclyffe is it.

Super Read - 4 great characters,
By
This review is from: Beyond the Breakwater (Paperback)
I liked the first novel in this series and expected to enjoy this book. I Loved it ! The romance between the 2 main characters was wonderful. What kept me from putting the book down until finished was the rocky relationship with the two secondary characters. I kept wanting to knock some sense into one of them. Throughly enjoyable read.
Look for the newest edition published by Bold Strokes Books October 2004. This is a Keeper ! Don't miss all the books in this series - Safe Harbor Beyond the Breakwater Distant Shores, Silent Thunder Storms of Change - available October 2006

Radclyffe Hasn't Written a Bad Book,
By
This review is from: Beyond the Breakwater (Paperback)
I read this book for the first time in late 2003 and finished the paperback version last week to prepare for the next in the series to be released in 2005. I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Safe Harbor. Radclyffe takes the inexperienced, but faithful, Reese and the jilted Tory down the road of starting their own family. She also explores the relationship of the young lovers Brianna and Carre as they begin to cross over into adulthood. Radclyffe delivers turmoil, mystery, problems with pregnancy, relationship fears, and so much more. This book takes the reader on many emotional highs and lows, and is highly recommended by this reviewer.

Worthy sequel, 3-1/2 stars,

This review is from: Beyond the Breakwater (Paperback)
The first book in this series is one of my favorite. In Tory King and Reese Conlon Radclyffe created a couple of wonderful characters with desires and fears, passion and integrity. Setting their story in Provincetown, a setting the author has affection for and experience with, just lends the novel an additional layer.
This book picks up two years after Safe Harbor concluded, and finds our protagonists starting up a family. Tory's injury takes such a back seat, it may as well be nonexistent, which was a little bit of an adjustment, but as she deals with the issues of her pregnancy we are still carried along on a familiar journey with this duo, one where Tory worries about the physical dangers inherent in Reese's job, and Reese worries about the medical mysteries affecting Tory over which she has no control. I really enjoy these early Provincetown books for their focus on these two main characters. However, we get a lot more action regarding the couple of Bri and Carre. Radclyffe has a way of bringing more and more focus on the peripheral characters in her series. But we get to know them in a much more limited manner, and often lacking any backstory, when compared to the main characters, so it's always a little awkward for me. And we get a lot of Bri, but less of Carre, though I was relieved when we finally did get a little more depth with Carre. Bri is an interesting compliment yet foil to the earnest and honorable Reese. She has a completely different background, but the same caretaker butch tendencies Reese has. She spends too much time being stupid due to her own misguided perspective and tendencies for her to really be endearing to me. But I try really hard to give her the benefit of the doubt because of the affection Reese and Tory have for her. I was more at peace with her by the end of the book, but it's not as enjoyable for me to read a book where I want to throttle a main character half the time. In summary: good Reese and Tory action as they work to expand their family, and even confront some loose ends in their pasts; too much stupid!Bri and not enough cool!Bri, but some welcome depth for Carre. Well worth the read overall.

Sequel that can stand alone,
By Nancy Lombardi (Lansing, MI USA) - See all my reviews

This wonderful sequel to Radclyffe's "Safe Harbor", which is one of my all-time favorite lesbian romance novels, can also stand on its own. One doesn't have to have read the first book to understand and enjoy this novel. The characters are well-developed and the plot pulls you along. It's a pleasure to read a book with so many strong, intelligent lesbian characters with human flaws yet who behave with integrity and courage. This one's a "must read"!

Complex hefty sequel that can stand on its own,
By Lori L. Lake "Author of Like Lovers Do, Buyer... (Portland, Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beyond The Breakwater (Paperback)
The sequel to the bestselling Safe Harbor is an even more complex and hefty novel than its predecessor. After two years, Reese Conlon and Tory King have cemented their relationship, and they're ready to start a family. Meanwhile, Reese's protégé, Brianna Parker, has grown weary of college in New York but is fearful of losing Caroline's love. While Reese and Tory are much more mature and strong, Bri and Caroline are still less sophisticated, which lends a sizable amount of angst to the story when they move apart so Bri can go through police academy and field training in Provincetown with Reese. With police work and the medical world as backgrounds, Radclyffe explores the lives of Reese, Tory, and Bri in a leisurely manner, providing a novel full of ups and downs, accidents, illness, misunderstandings, and life-threatening peril. The powerful relationships between family and friends are a major emphasis, and those who enjoy fairly graphic and frequent erotic scenes will not be disappointed. An entertaining read and yet another successful volume to add to the prolific Radclyffe's expanding oeuvre.

The plot of this book is as described elsewhere.
Whether you read Radclyffe's series books, like the Justice series or the Honor series or the Provincetown series, or you read one of her stand-alone romances, you can not go wrong. I have been reading lesbian fiction for many years, and can honestly say that I have never come across a writer that has so affected me. Her characters are strong, intelligent, and romantic. Naysayers will say that Radclyffe's characters are too perfect almost never flawed - either in looks or character. That may be true, but aren't you tired of the genre's penchant for ordinary? Radclyffe's characters are always enchanting, intoxicating, enticing, and intense. The stories, particularly in the series books, are all first class. Most of her series books are page-turners. And in two of the books, I actually turned to the last page to make sure that the main characters survived - something I never do. Radclyffe let us believe, at least for the duration of each of her books, that the grand passion, the true love, the happy-ever-after are all possible. She lets us believe that being a strong, intelligent woman does not mean that we will be alone and/or isolated. The only caveat I have is to read the series books in order. And if you enjoy watching a writer grow, then read the non-series books in the order they were written and watch Radclyffe's talent grow before your very eyes.

Radcylffe rarely disappoints her readers, I think across the board all of her books are great--the p-town series is exceptional in my opinion. Radcylffe's understanding and care for the characters pours from the pages of this novel and every novel in the series. In short, you won't be disappointed and if you are--well, that's what you get for following the crowd and taking someone elses opinion over your own!
