Book Description

February 1, 2004
Providing close air support to ground troops in Vietnam was hazardous anytime, but on March 10, 1966, the Special Forces in the old French Fortress of Ashau were in particular trouble as the Viet Cong closed in. When an American airman went down, his death was a near certainty. That's when Major Bernie Fisher had a decision to make: leave the pilot to his fate or undertake a near-suicidal landing to help him out. Bernie's decision made him just one of sixteen members in the history of the Air Force to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars I served with Bernie at Pleiku., January 18, 2012

I had the pleasure and honor of knowing Bernie Fisher while sharing living quarters (down the walkway from the Officer's Club)with him at Pleiku. I was the Chief of Intelligence as a young Captain/Major at Pleiku and I briefed and debriefed Bernie often ... including the 10 March 1966 Medal of Honor mission. I have seen him several times in our retired lives. There are few, if any, more humble, dedicated, selfless, and caring people in this world. I don't say that lightly. Bernie was well respected by all who knew him. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and "reliving" some of our experiences while in Southeast Asia in the mid-1960's.

Although not included in this book, there was another mission of interest in Bernie's brief time at Bien Hoa Air Base prior to his move to Pleiku. He had one mission to give an orientation flight to a young USAF Public Affairs Lieutenant by the name of Bob Schieffer. Neither had any inkling that one guy in that cockpit would be presented the Medal of Honor ... and the other would go on to become the iconic newsman Bob Schieffer of CBS News. Small world indeed.

I would highly recommend this book for those interested in a true story of an American hero who has all the incredible personal values that we should all try to emulate.

Lt.General Bob Springer, USAF, Retired
