About the Author

Julius Torelli, M.D., is director of the Integrative Cardiology Center in High Point, North Carolina, between Greensboro and Winston-Salem. A board-certified cardiologist and internist, he served his internship and residency at the famed Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and was later awarded a fellowship there. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

George Ryan has collaborated on many health books, including Before the Change by Anne Louise Gittleman and The Heart Depression Connection by Windsor Ting, M.D., and Greg Fricchione, M.D.

What I think is particularly significant about this book is its emphasis on the role of inflammation in heart disease and all the markers of inflammation that can be tested for. A focus on cholesterol is not enough.

The cause of inflammation should also be emphasized and I would have suggested a bigger emphasis on the role of pathogens in inflammation, in particular, bacteria, such as Chlamydiae pneumoniae and Mycoplasma.

These and other pathogens may also partly explain why so many people have trouble exercising and losing weight. As they age, they acquire more pathogens that cause health problems that accumulate over time. This may be associated with many diseases of aging. The Autoimmunity Research Foundation is just one group looking into this.

I read this book prior to my visit to Dr. Julius Torelli for a cardiac workup. Although traditionally trained, Dr. Torelli takes a holistic approach to the treatment and prevention of heart disease. There is so much more than just cholesterol that are indicators of heart disease and merely prescribing cholesterol lowering drugs is not the total answer to the treatment of cardiac issues. This book was a real eye opener. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to look "beyond cholesterol."
