More About the Author

Jehu J Hanciles was born in Sierra Leone and received his first degree (BA in history and sociology) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. Graduate education (MTh and PhD) followed at the University of Edinburgh. Thereafter, he taught for three years at Africa University (Zimbabwe) before moving to the U.S. on a postdoctoral fellowship at Fuller Theological Seminary that allowed him to complete his first book, Euthanasia of a Mission: African Church Autonomy in a Colonial Context (CT: Praeger, 2002). He has been on the faculty of Fuller Graduate School of Intercultural Studies since 2000, serving as associate professor, history of Christianity and globalization. He is also director of the Center for Missiological Research. His most recent book, Beyond Christendom: Globalization, African Migration and the Transformation of the West (Orbis, 2008), examines the interconnection between globalization, migration, and religious expansion and uses research on African migration to the U.S. to make the case that new migration patterns point to the West as a major frontier of religious interactions and missionary engagement. He lives in Upland, Califonia, with his wife (Biffoh, a software engineer) and their two children (Sade and Shola). He enjoys playing tennis and is an avid supporter of Manchester United Football Club.

3.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Review, February 21, 2011

This review is from: Beyond Christendom: Globalization, African Migration and the Transformaiton of the West (Paperback)
I read Hanciles magisterial volume on the impact of globalization and migration on the growth of Christian faith for a recent doctoral tutorial. The book was a tour de force covering a wide gamut of material. Most interesting was his insightful overview of the various theories of globalization. His analysis of these theories was quite helpful. While I found little new in his overall premise, the book did give concrete data (especially on the forces of migration) to reinforce the work of Andrew Walls and Lamin Sanneh for the transmission of faith. I'm sure this book will prove to be a useful addition to the works on globalization, migration and faith transmission.
