Book Description

February 1, 2012
ICD-10 adoption demands that we reorient ourselves within a familiar environment and requires a new level of responsibility from the traditional provider role. Beyond Coding: How ICD-10 Will Transform Clinical Documentation is written with a greater purpose beyond adopting a new coding system; it addresses the need for healthcare leaders to fully understand the magnitude of change in documentation and coding. Those who do will reap the early benefits, and in the course of doing so, will build competencies in large-scale organizational change, a strategic differentiator in a rapidly evolving healthcare industry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

While the ICD-10 transition is a massive project, the greater detail and accuracy required of clinical documentation brings tremendous opportunity to use that data to improve the quality and cost of care we provide. Beyond Coding is a great resource to guide the transformation, and we have to begin now. --Bill Spooner, Chief Information Officer, Sharp HealthCare

This book empowers healthcare leaders to change the focus of the ICD-10 conversation from executing a software change and coding strategy to arguing for a disciplined methodology in improving clinical documentation and quality of care, and for alignment with high-level EHR adoption and evidence-based medicine. The entire healthcare enterprise will have no choice but to get on board! --David A. Beuther, Director of Medical Informatics, National Jewish Health

ICD-10 is a significant organizational challenge. Though benefits will be realized in the long-term, the impact ICD-10 will have on the entire organization cannot be underestimated. This book provides critical guidance to healthcare leaders as they navigate the challenges of improving clinical documentation. Now is the time to develop and execute a plan for adoption. --Jill A. Truitt, Chief Information Officer, UT Medical Group

I estimate that, out of 12,000,000 books written about the subject of ICD10, not one focuses on the ACTUAL PROCESS of assembling an accurate code. Instead, as in this book, the focus is on everyting and anything short of how to use documentation to assemble a code. Why is this? Is code assembling considered a "high art" form to be done only by a few in-the-know? Why is it so hard to find an author who realizes that the bottom line for ICD10 is ASSEMBLING AN ACCURATE CODE? For this reason, it would be immensely useful if ICD10-subject authors would cease focusing on whining, letures, persuasion, theories, arguments, statistical studies, etc, (and let's face it these are all forms of procrastination), and begin focusing on the specifics of the actual process used by provider and coder, i.e., ASSEMBLING THE CODES. For heaven's sake, at this rate end users are have to figure the assembly process out for themselves if they hope to get paid properly. Please Amazon, bring in some ICD10 authors who grasp this and focus on the bottom line. Thank you.
