"We stepped into that swallowing void",
By
This review is from: Beyond the Crimson Horizon (Audio CD)
In the Doom Metal wake of Candlemass came two flagbearers of the genre: My Dying Bride and Solitude Aeturnus. The latter of which sounded more like their forefathers with epic soundscapes and soaring vocalizations, grooving riffs and excellent guitar solos. Doom Metal enthusiasts owe it to themselves to fork out the cash to pick up this release. This is Solitude Aeturnus at their most inspired, before they seemed to run out of steam. Thankfully, after a long hiatus, they returned refreshed with their most recent album "Alone" which clearly sounds as if it was modeled after this early masterwork. "Beyond the Crimson Horizon" is a superb addition to any Doom Metal collection. There is a problem with a couple of the tracks on the CD I received. At the beginning and end of "Beneath the Fading Sun" the sound is slightly static, while at the end of "Plague of Procreation" this happens. It is hard to believe this was intentionally produced for this effect, like a dusty old long-playing record. It may only be my CD that does this, and it is completely unnoticeable throughout the rest of these two songs. So this is really only a minor complaint, and it may not even be justifiable. There are two demo tracks added on of "It Came Upon One Night" and a horrible sounding "City of Armageddon." Both are completely unnecessary to listen to, as one is already polished and part of the album proper and the other is simply trash. Ignore these final negatives as the actual album is a fantastic Doom Metal excursion worthy of the highest praise. The minor flaws are incredibly minor, and I always just skip the final two added tracks anyway. Fans of the genre rejoice at this remastered re-release. Highly recommended.

Almost forgot,
By A. Wakefield "Partial Observer" (Indian Fortress, NY) - See all my reviews

In high school my greatest dream would be to have a band that sounded something like this band. And I came on here to sell this cd because I almost forgot how important it once was to me. Now this other reviewer reminds me that this album is the epitome of something... of something very melodramatic and not too complex, but it's the height of that doom metal stuff, if one can speak of that genre reaching heights. all ribbing aside, it is something kinda special to me and apparently most people who own it, and thus the high price you're seeing here... I ain't selling mine... you never know when I might get back into dungeons and dragons and all that stuff and want to listen to this really bad.
