Book Description

August 1, 1998
Discover How to Gain Maximum Muscle-Strength in Minimum Time, Using Breakthrough Techniques That Blow the Roof Off Traditional Ab Exercises As a former Soviet Union Special Forces conditioning coach Pavel Tsatsouline already knew a thing or two about how to create bullet-stopping abs. Since then, he has combed the world to pry out this select group of primevally powerful ab exercises guaranteed to yield the fastest, most effective results known to man. According to Pavel, "Crunches belong on the junk pile of history, next to Communism. "Feeling the burn with high reps is a waste of time!" Save yourself countless hours of unrewarding, if not useless if not damaging toil. Get with the program. Make fast gains and achieve blistering, rock-hard abs now. Fry your abs without the spine-wrecking, neck-jerking stress of traditional crunches using this radical situp designed by the worlds leading back and muscle function expert, Professor Janda, from Czechoslovakia. No one but no one has ever matched Bruce Lee's ripped-beyond-belief abs. What was his favorite exercise? Here it is. Now you can rip your own abs to eye-popping shreds and reclassify yourself as superhuman.

When it came to wanting titanium abs yesterday, the Soviet Special Forces didn't believe in delayed gratification. Pavel gave them what they wanted. If you want abs that'll put you in the world's top one percent, this cruel and unusual drill does the trick. Also discover: How to protect your back and develop exceptional abdominal muscle tone, with a landmark exercise designed for the special needs of Russian ballet dancers and gymnasts. The secret weapon of an old time strongman famous for his exceptional strength and a sinewy, wiry physique. How a little known secret from East German research radically transforms the traditional situp. A drill Russian full contact fighters use to increase their striking power and toughen their midsections against blows. Unlike anything seen in the US!

A Yoga asana which tightens the internal muscles of the abdominal wall and makes your waist smaller even if you have not lost a pound!

"The crunch belongs on the junk pile of history next to communism!"
So says Pavel Tsatsouline, former Soviet Union Special Forces conditioning coach and abdominal expert, in this workout manual. Expect to find some of the most grueling stomach-busters that you have ever experienced--Tsatsouline advocates low-repetition intensity over high-repetition "burn" exercises, and introduces us to the Ab Pavelizer, a machine of his own invention that allows for perfect sit-ups. Beyond Crunches has many new and challenging drills, making this a great manual for anyone who needs some variety in their workout routine. Included is the Flag, Bruce Lee's favorite abdominal exercise. --Brendan J. LaSalle

"As a chiropractic physician, I see the deleterious effects of a weak torso on the lower back. Weak abs lead to years of back pain and dysfunction. As a world record holding powerlifter, I know the importance of strong abs on maximum power performance. Beyond Crunches is THE text and authority on ab/trunk stability."Doug Grant, Arnold Schwarzenegger Fitness Weekend Martial Arts Chairman "In our opinion your training program is the best of its kind and can be enjoyed by people of all ages." -- Dr. Fred Clary, National Powerlifting Champion and World

First, let me say that this is a good book, BUT, it is too expensive. A better solution is to buy the video version (same title)which costs only $29.95! I also recommend the video because some of the exercises are harder to visualize by reading the book where as the video does a better job at explaining the movements. Keep in mind the following points though; 1. These exercises are more advanced than many other regular abdominal exercises. 2. There is only about 30 minutes of info on the video... half of it spent on an exercise called the Junda situp. 3. I do not agree with the author slamming other conventional abdominal exercises such as the regular crunches: even though his exercises may have advanced benefits, many strong mid-sections were built with regular exercises.

My final point is... if you have to have this info, buy the video and skip the book... use the extra $5.00 (or so) to go to a nice movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate training guidelines for a granite midsection..., March 24, 2000
By
Sean Williams (Long Beach, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beyond Crunches (Paperback)
Pavel delivers once again! This book details the mechanics of abdominal and oblique development in an easy to understand, user friendly format. Learn to either build up your midsection, tone it up, get a prominent six-pack, and/or increase your punching and throwing power by learning to integrate your powerful midsection! There is one particular exercise that I found to be super productive in adding to punching power, and this is the only book that has it... Pavel also answers some FAQ about ab training, such as how to get a six-pack, how to make your waist smaller, why crunches and training for the "burn" are no good, and what to do instead. Also included are training guidelines for every day training or just twice a week, and how to adjust your training to fit you schedule. All the exercises are illustrated, and he even touches on what to eat during your program. Guidelines for aerobic training for fat loss and cardiovascular health are also included, as well as the cardio-plateau buster "anaerobics". It is extremely simple and easy to understand. Pavel explains how to protect your spine and perform the "perfect" situp. All in all a great book by a great author, definitely a must-have for any fighter and lifter. My punching power and deadlifting strength went up very quickly on this program and I am very pleased and I know you will be, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that really deserves the appellation "Beyond...", August 19, 2000

Here are some points in addition to those made by the other 5-star reviewers:

The punchy, humorous, confident style of writing appeals - especially to my 18 year-old son. We work out together with Pavel's routines and laugh along together with his hyperbole.

The book deals not only with abs, but also the entire body core.

Yes, the book is pricey, but it is economical with words. You'll be able to throw out the other abs books you've been accumulating over the years - even Brungardt. If you measure value in terms of quality of ideas rather than in numbers of pages, this would have to be the cheapest abs book on the market. It takes you out of the rut of neighbourhood gym fitness, into the elite world of international-level athleticism.

The exercises are great fun, too! All have full range of motion - very satisfying. I'm 51 and can do one "evil wheel" and ten "dragon flags", demonstrating that you don't have to be an athlete to get started with Pavel's routine.
