Beyond the Darkness follows Predators of Darkness as the second in a fantastic three book series by Leonard D. Hilley II. Although I was not a fan of Sci-Fi novels, this author has changed my interest and attitude in that regard. I found myself so mesmerized that I did not even take the time to review Beyond the Darkness before I picked up and finished the third book in the series The Game of Pawns. Engrossed, I found myself on the edge of my seat frantically flipping pages to see what was going to happen next.

The reader should be aware that these three books should be read in sequence to follow the character development as the stage is set and progresses.

The year is 2076. Three years have passed and Pittsburg has been rebuilt.

Main character Daniel Hutchinson suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome as a result of the stressors experienced in the first novel. He married Julia and they have a beautiful 3 year old daughter, Felicia who believes that Doctor Helmsby's vicious creation, shape shifting protector, Morton, who she calls Cuddles, is merely a cat. She is unaware that other cats do not speak as well.

Johanna, the former bitter enemy of Julia and Daniel's former mate are now close friends. Johanna has toned her muscular shape down, had breast implants and is now the star of a television exercise program.

One of the main characters from the first book Lucas Ridale has been arrested for the murder of two senate cabinet members and two security guards caught on video tape in Washington, DC while he was in Denver--a crime Lucas insists his clone Lucian committed.

With the demise of the evil TransGenCorp CEO Idris in the first novel, Doctor Helmsby accepted employment there as the head of the corporation.

What I loved about Beyond the Darkness was how different it was to Predators of Darkness. In the first book the reader is enclosed in the small post apocalyptic world of Daniel and his friends. They stick to roof tops and struggle just to feed themselves. In book two three years have passed since that nightmarish time and everyone is trying to rebuild their lives and fit back into the society that never disappeared. Daniel is stuck in the past even though he married Julia and has a daughter. The shifters are still real for him and he believes that the corporation who caused all this, TransGenCorp and the CEO who died, is still plotting. To the readers and others Daniel may seem like he is suffering from PTSD and is slightly paranoid... until Lucas tells him that he's being convicted of a murder when he was in another city. That means only one thing, his clone is active and is obviously having his strings pulled by someone.

In this installment the readers are pushing for Daniel to prove he's not just paranoid, while also believing that Idris, the evil CEO, is dead... who else could be out there? It's interesting to see all of our characters, who struggled through near death, be brought back in the fold of society and what that means for each of the characters. This book was well written and again, better the second time around even knowing what happened. The third book Game of Pawns is out since April 2010, and a must read as well. I've also heard the writer is finishing up the screen play for Predators of Darkness. Enjoy!

It's hard to review a second book in a series without giving away some of the details of how the first book ends, namely who lives and where they end up. I've tried to only mention two names, but if you haven't read Predators of Darkness: Aftermath, proceed with caution when it comes to reading this review. I have tried very hard to be a bit vague while also providing a review and opinion on the book.

Beyond the Darkness picks up three years after the last book ended. The survivors of the last book have moved on with their lives, finding a place for themselves within the society in which they now live. But Daniel has had a hard time adapting to this new life. He continues to look around corners and wait for the shifters to return. His friends say he's being too paranoid, but he can't help it. He feels like something is going to happen. Then he gets a call from Lucas, who has been arrested for murder. He insists his clone has come back and framed him for the crime, and he wants Daniel to help him.

While Beyond the Darkness takes place in an environment that is more modern than distopian, it is still filled with plenty of sci-fi aspects, including more shifters, and lots of action. This time, though, there's more at stake as Daniel has a family to protect.

Once again, it's hard to figure out who is good and who is bad ~ even some of the "bad" guys have some redeeming qualities and understandable reasons for doing the things they do. There's also a lot more reflection on the part of the different characters about decisions they've made and the direction of their lives. We get to know some of the characters more deeply in this novel, and now I want to know what happens to them in the third novel of the series: A Game of Pawns.
