The interview was conducted in preparation for an upcoming documentary, Beyond Nuclear: Bipolar Children and Their Families. After the 2Ohm hour interview, producer David Barker said he knew the interview should be released on its own. Barker hit upon the title when struck by how the interview extended the content of Dr. Fristad's book, Raising a Moody Child.
Dr. Fristad is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Ohio State University and Director of Research and Psychological Services in the OSU Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her area of specialty is childhood mood disorders. She has published over 125 articles and book chapters addressing the assessment and treatment of childhood-onset depression, suicidality and bipolar disorder.
She co-authored a book for families entitled Raising a Moody Child: How to Cope with Depression and Bipolar Disorder and co-edited the Handbook of Serious Emotional Disturbance in Children and Adolescents for mental health professionals. Dr. Fristad serves on the Board of Directors for five web-based education and support groups for children and families with mood disorders.
Dr. Fristad has been the principal or co-principal investigator on over two dozen federal, state, and local grants. Recently, she was awarded a 5-year NIMH grant to investigate the efficacy of Multi-Family Psychoeducation Groups in treating childhood mood disorders and a 5-year multi-site NIMH grant to determine how children with manic symptoms progress over time, among other research studies.
