Editorial Reviews

Pantera reached a major milestone in 1994 when the legendary metal band s seventh studio album, Far Beyond Driven, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, becoming the fastest-selling album of the group s career and its second consecutive platinum release. Not only a commercial success, the album also earned positive reviews around the world for the beautiful brutality of its all-out sonic assault.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of that landmark album and Rhino celebrates with a special two-disc version that includes a remastered version of the album, along with a live performance from the 1994 Monsters of Rock Festival.

Following the breakthrough success of 1992 s Vulgar Display of Power which has since been certified double platinum singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul returned in March 1994 with Far Beyond Driven. Following its #1 debut, Far Beyond Driven remained on the Billboard album chart for seven more months and many still regard it as the heaviest album to ever top the chart.

Its 12 tracks represented a continuation of the previous album s relentless musical onslaught with hard-hitting tracks like the first single "I m Broken" as well as the mosh-pit classics "5 Minutes Alone" and "Slaughtered." Another standout track was the group s swirling acoustic cover of Black Sabbath s "Planet Caravan," which became a live favorite when Pantera hit the road to support the album later that year.

Fans already familiar with Far Beyond Driven are in for a treat with the second disc of the 20th Anniversary Edition. Dubbed Far Beyond Bootleg - Live From Donington '94, the disc contains Pantera full live set recorded at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Donington, England on June 4, 1994. The 40-minute show comprises nine tracks taken from the band s three most recent albums including: "Use My Third Arm" and "Strength Beyond Strength" from Far Beyond Driven, "Walk," "Mouth For War," and "This Love" off of Vulgar Display of Power, plus the title track from Cowboys from Hell as well as the live staple melding "Domination" and "Hollow."

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the reveiw for the 20th anniversery edition March 25, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It is common knowledge that Pantera ruled the metal world in 1992. This was the release that put them at the forefront of music scene period! Sorry had to put that out there, now the review. With the first track you notice that it seems a little cleaner and the bass is heard a lot better in this mix. The solos seem tighter and the vocals are sounding a lot more energized. The guitar is so alive in the mix you can almost see Dime smiling from above in approval as the music comes through the speakers. The drums always sounded great on the album now they are also brought the mix up so every little slight tap is heard, very nicely. It was far beyond (pun intended) and above a superior album in terms of sound and style when it came out. With the new remaster, it gives this release a whole new life and a reason for a younger metal head to rejoice! The second disc is a recording of the Donnington Mosters of Rock performance. Initially looking at the packaging you see no difference. that is until you take out the booklet and see that it features the Banned artwork that was only released on the international version of the CD! As a music lover and big fan of all things Pantera I say this is a must buy! P.S. This CD is the first music my kids moshed to when they were little!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is METAL! April 23, 2014
By T. Dahl
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I got this album when I was 12 years old in 1994 when it came out. It kicked my a$$ all over my bedroom, then down the hall, up the stairs, down the stairs, out into the yard...you get the point. The guitar work is blisteringly fast while intricate at the same time and just when it gets to maximum overdrive, boom a melodic metal song or guitar line. These guys were a bit ahead of their time as far as actual heavy metal. They lead the way for the genre in a time when Metallica was getting a more soft and not a lot of metal music was "mainstream". This album debuted on the Billboard chart at #1 and was by all accounts Pantera's masterpiece. You have anthems like "I'm Broken" on here and then a laid back mellow cover of "Planet Caravan" as well. It's good music and if you are an aspiring metal fan this would be a good breakthrough album. Also, Phil Anselmo is metal singer king. This specific release has a live bootleg disc of their Monsters of Rock show from 1994 which is a great 9 song set where they sound just as good live as they do on a disc. The main album has also been remastered and I have to say that it does sound better. The low end exists in a heavier form and overall album has more depth, dynamic range, and has been sweetened a bit. Heavy Metal Music to my ears. Talent, brute force, musicianship...METAL!

5.0 out of 5 stars Far Beyond Driven: the 20th anniversary March 27, 2014
By Michael
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
We all know very well how metal isn't for everybody, and the abrasive nature of Pantera's music is a prime example from their rough image to the tough guy sound mixed with their southern fried disposition. Radio and MTV wouldn't touch 'em back then though since the passing of guitarist Dimebag Darrell, they've been slightly more accepted on rock radio with a couple of their singles played on and off. Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display Of Power saw them distancing themselves from their 80's glam image and pushing towards their signature brand of power groove. With Far Beyond Driven, all bets were off. Pantera came out with what I think is their heaviest & catchiest album to date. People reading this will probably want to try and correct me by saying that The Great Southern Trendkill is their heaviest album, and I agree. It's their darkest album, but when it comes to better songs that are heavy and catchy, Far Beyond Driven is the better of the two. Thanks to the 20th anniversary of Far Beyond Driven (following the 20th anniversary reissues of the earlier albums Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display Of Power), the album has been remastered by Paul Logus (Clutch, Shadows Fall, Anthrax), giving it the cleanest and best sound quality possible. The bonus disc features live audio dubbed Far Beyond Bootleg - Live From Donington '94 for those wanting to add more live Pantera to their collection.

By now you're probably asking why you should bother if you already have the original version. Just trust me. Don't cheat yourself by passing this up if you haven't picked it up by now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!! April 25, 2014
By Jenny
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I heard about a deluxe double disc for $13 I thought it's gonna be a cheap version but I'm a huge Pantera fan and bought it anyway. The disc arrived and I was really amazed. That's a real deluxe version, two discs, high quality printings and a amazing booklet I wish I would bought more than one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great of course, but... March 28, 2014
By epac
Format:Audio CD
Got the re-mastered version, love it, sounds great, classic, brutal album, etc. The live show's sound quality isn't all there ("good" bootleg status), but the energy is palpable.

Question - what happened to "The Badge"? (Poison Idea cover, b-side of Planet Caravan as I recall) Shouldn't that have been included here???

One of my all time favorites. Sounds great with this remaster. Plus you get the Far Beyond Bootleg Donington '94 live set with it. Good deal for the price.
