5.0 out of 5 stars Wanna play like Elvin Jones? Here's how..., March 6, 2002

This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
Another great book from John Riley. This is of course more challenging than "The Art of Bop Drumming", which should be read and studied thoroughly before digging into this one. The included CD is very useful. The post bop drumming is studied in a logical sequence, with in depth analysis of timekeeping and solo examples from the most important drummers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful book for drummers, June 5, 2000

I've often enjoyed John Riley's columns in Modern Drummer magazine. He really knows how to present information in an accessible way. The charts are easy to read and the accompanying c.d. is excellent. A must for the aspiring jazz drummer.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book...., March 9, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
this book is a great learning tool from semi-pro to professional drummers that want to refine and improve their jazz and drumming skills. The audio cd that comes with the book offers great examples of the charts and exercises listed. It also lists other recommended listening and reading material. In my opinion, this is even better than the first book from John Riley. Anyone who buys this book will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing - In Depth Study of Meter + Creativity, April 1, 2005
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
John Riley has scored once again. When I met him last year, I asked him about a tune he wrote called "Speed Bumps Ahead" which is in the book. All he said was "(long pause)but of course I did (long pause)." This describes the book alone. It is long, dark, deep and sophisticated, yet playful, while incorporating rhythmic challenges and creative ideas all at the same time. It is a drum education masterpiece. It is an advanced book, but John also has a lot to offer in terms of stylistic playing. From his versions of the tunes, one can learn so much from his sound alone. It is truly one of the best educational and music minus one books of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bursting with information!, February 15, 2005
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
If you want to learn 'heavy' jazz drumming, this is the book to get. Completely loaded with advanced drumming lessons. I have always wondered how drummers arrived at the 'random' comping I have heard in so many jazz recordings.....its all explained here! This book will keep you busy for a long, long time.

I already had the last book by John Riley but this one is much better, every drummer should have and practice " Beyong Bop Drumming ", I am very happy and proud to get this book. This method is really made for the be-bop fans with many examples and songs you can practice, very interesting and complete, excellent !!!

I am just about finished with Riley's other book, "The Art of Bop Drumming." I wasn't sure whether to move on into this book, or continue working on mastering the material in the first book. I decided to order "Beyond Bop Drumming" and I'm glad that I did. It addresses a number of things in more detail such as uptempo playing, and begins to get you into comping with your hi-hat foot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riley does it again., February 24, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
This is a great follow up to his "bop drumming" book. It helps expand your versatility on the drums by adding more comping that utilizes the hi hat as part of your comping figures. The section on "implied time" is amazing. A must have for drummers who want to become a truley "musical" drummer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't think about it. JUST BUY THIS BOOK !!!, August 31, 2009
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Book & CD) (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
John's books and DVD are just the greatest. They will help bring your musical spirit to life if you read his written word, follow the instructions, and dig in. Provided that you've developed an adequate level of proficiency on your instrument this material along with listening and playing out is about all you'll need if you are serious about being a jazz musician (of course you're studying your harmonic stuff and history too). When I was young I would have kept this wealth of knowledge that John is sharing with us a secret. Do yourselves a big favor and get started on the right track to being a musical and tasteful drummer. I only wish that I could rate this material "10 STARS". ( I guess I just did !!!)
