Book Description

July 25, 1999
A 14 month backpacking trip around the world. The author sold everything he owned, resigned from an excellent job in the northwest and flew to Asia. During the ensuing adventures, he traveled throughout Asia and competed in the Everest Marathon (start line at 17,500 feet). He trekked in northern Thailand's jungles, stayed at the British Embassy in Delhi, and visited sacred shrines in India. In Africa, he visited the mountain gorillas in Zaire and traveled to the seldom seen Mountains of the Moon in Uganda. During the trip he followed some friend's request to look for "the meaning of life." The adventures changed his life and taught him what it takes to realize their dreams.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...In his world-wide trip, Dennison didn't skip the usual tourist sights. He dutifully watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and marveled at the Taj Mahal. But this (his book) isn't the Griswold Family Vacation Guide. He also did a lot of what you'd expect from a hopeless adventurer - he took the side roads, the secret trails and inched along the sheer cliffs. He sat side-by-side with a rare silver-back gorilla in Africa, swam in the frigid waters of a sacred lake in India. -- Deseret News

...Mike Dennison listened to all the voices telling him it was madness to quit his job and to backpack around the world. He listened, to be sure, to all those exhortations to back away from the precipice of the unknown and edge back into the center of safety, and then he did a strange thing - he jumped. Dennison's BEYOND THE EDGE: A Backpacking Trip Around the World has recently been published by Sagarmatha Press.

Beyond the Edge is the extraordinary tale of Dennison's fourteen-month trek around the globe, an adventure that began innocently enough with a campsite conversation along the Colorado River during which he was nudged into realizing his dream. -- Junction Magazine

There are just a few Mike Dennison's in the world. For the rest of us, there's the book. We can experience the thin mountain air, the steamy jungles and the parched deserts and then turn out the light and go to sleep. -- Deseret News, August 28, 1999

Beyond the Edge is the extraordinary tale of Dennison's fourteen-month trek around the globe, and adventure that began innocently enough with a campsite conversation along the Colorado River in which he was nudged into realizing a dream, and included his journeys into some of the most remote locales on the planet. This epic walkabout took him through Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, the Himalayas, India and Africa, England and western Europe. All the way, Dennison entertains and startles the reader with his incisive and good humored reporting. -- Junction Magazine, September 1999

From the Publisher

Many people fail to realize their dreams. They have them, hold them and then realize that it seems to be too late. Mike Dennison was in danger of doing the same thing. It took the persuasive efforts of two friends to break him free from one culture and to plunge him into many others. His story is an inspiration to those who are waiting. He is the friendly persuader for dreams of all kinds.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment, January 7, 2002
This review is from: Beyond the Edge (Paperback)
Mike Dennison went to some exotic locations and got photos of himself doing handstands there. That pretty much sums up this book. If you've never, ever, traveled beyond the outskirts of your home town, then maybe - just maybe - this book has something to offer you. But if you've ever been outside the U.S. and have a modicum of curiosity about the rest of the world, you already know more than this book can tell you.

The book's subtitle is "A backpacking trip around the world." The author did not do a "backpacking trip", nor did he travel "around the world". He kept his travel gear in a backpack, but if he spent any time in the back country, he didn't write much about it. As for going "around the world", he visted locations in Southeast Asia, Africa and Western Europe.

The author didn't bother to learn much of the history or geography of the places he visited. As a result his insights are superficial and his descriptions, bland. Despite having made this trip when he was in his 40's, the author seems naive as a teenager. As if to emphasize this adolescent tenor, or perhaps to fill out his thin narrative, he treats readers to facile observations on his traveling companions' marital problems.

It may seem mercurial to give this book one star when others have given it five, but I honestly cannot find a reason to give it more.

2.0 out of 5 stars No Backingpacking included, March 2, 2007
This review is from: Beyond the Edge (Paperback)
I agree with Nobody's business, there wasn't any backpacking story in this book. Also, there wasn't any around the world trip! I would have rated it higher if the title wasn't so misleading. It is a decent book about traveling Asia, and a very small part of Europe. His traveling stories are very good indeed, but that's not what I bought the book for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating tale of someone who pushes his comfort zones, January 18, 2000

This review is from: Beyond the Edge (Paperback)
Mike Dennison (Dr. Pain to those who know him) is someone who likes to push his own comfort zones as well as those he meets. This book's easy reading style rivets you as he portrays his encounters of excitement and danger. On a budget that would make a homeless person cringe, Mike packed more adventure into his trip than the average person would experience in 5 lifetimes. This book is a must read for those who want to know what it is like to explore other countries in an offbeat fashion. Read it and experience some of the real culture and people of foreign lands. It will invigorate, rejuvenate and challenge you to pursue some of your long forgotten dreams.
