4.0 out of 5 stars Great but unknown, April 20, 2005
This review is from: Beyond Good and Evil PS2 (Electronics)
I picked this game up used for about $15 and it turned out to be one of the best games i've purchased for the playstation 2. Its seems that very few people have heard of this game or played it. Those who have seem to unanimously love it. At the price this game is now going for, its a steal.

The story line is interesting and engaging. You play a reporter who is attempting to uncover a military conspiracy that is kidnapping and exploiting the innocent civilians of Hyllis under the guise of alien attacks.

The gameplay is a little difficult to get used to at first. I didnt think the character controls were responsive enough and the movements/layout is different from most games of the genre.

Fighting is not a main component of this game, and in fact, I neve really developed fighting skills due to a lack of practice. Many situations in this game can be negotiated by the use of stealth, allowing the character to avoid many fights. Much of the gameplay involves problem and puzzle solving instead of actual battles.

Those who love side games will be slightly dissapointed. Although there are some, they tend towards the repetitive. There are side quests as well, namely finding all pearls, photographing all animals, and races.

The graphics are pretty good, and the music and sound are excellent. The voice acting is pretty good, expecially when compared with the Japanese translations in most games. No odd non-sequiters, crabbed grammer or uncomprehensible monologues here.

The story is what grabs you in this game. I was intially put off by what I considered the childish features like the animal people. I got over it and quickly got into the plot and story.

The major complaint is with the size and scope of the game. Hyllis is small. The map itself only has one city (which itself is rather small) in the center surrounded by about 2 or 3 visitable locations and 20 or so 'dungeons'. There are really only 2 major "dungeons" with the others being minor areas which are easily completed. I would have liked to have seen at least one other major area to add another 10-15 hours of gameplay.

All in all its a really good gome to which I give a strong recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Immerse yourself into Hillys, December 15, 2004

This review is from: Beyond Good and Evil PS2 (Electronics)
This is an engrossing, fun, sometimes hair-raising adventure. We like it because, while the protagonist does have to fight, it is not the central skill. Her (your) stealth abilities and ability to piece together clues and decide on a course of action is even more prominent in the game. I'm almost at the end...where is the sequel????

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: sometimes Jade must perform a task or fight a foe along with a friend (you control both Jade and her friend), and sometimes her friend gets in the way.

The world of Hillys is beautiful and deep with lots of areas to explore and continue the adventure. Lots of mini-games that have bearing on the main saga.

i am 16 hours into this game, and was very close to finishing. i enjoyed it a lot up to this point. but i cannot recommend this game to anyone, and i can only hope to steer clear any that try and buy this. after completing the slaughterhouse i went back to iris hq. funny thing is i was able to walk through double hh, which i thought was odd because he was usually in the way. well that's the last i saw of him. he never appeared again so i can't finish the game. WHAT A BUNCH OF FU@KING BULL$#IT. now i'm glad this game didn't sell well because what a crock of sh#t.
