[that kind of money] for a Door Stopper, August 2, 2000
This review is from: Beyond Html (Paperback)
I bought this book quite a while back hoping to learn something new. All it mainly talks about is where to find links to other sites that look good but don't explain how they made them at all(may as well just look in Yahoo). The book also goes on a lot about java and vrml.<-Out Dated. Flash has just killed these two styles of programming. CS/SS-VBScript and pl-CGI or c/c++-CGI are not explained enough. If you need to learn about graphics, go to your photoshop and press F1. If you want to learn about internet programming, buy a book that will teach you.
for client side (browser programming)

for server side (server programming)
Beginners+ (window OS) (interpreted)-slow
Active Server Pages (asp-VBscript) "Active server pages 2 Unleashed"
If you understand c/c++: (all OS')(compiled)-fast
c/c++ Mark Felton's CGI Internet Programming with c++ and c
If you just want to get a little of the internet money and don't want to spend hours learning how to program, then buy a book on flash. It seems to be the software for the moment. What would take me hours to do in a Java Applet or JS/DynHTML, could be done in Flash in just minutes.
If you just want to have a better understanding about how the internet works, get a book that will teach you something while you read. If you've already got html under your belt, then you should look into the options I placed above....Spend your hours reading something worth the money you spent. eg: the above books.
Or just have a look online to get a better understanding then get the above books. They are the pick of all internet books today.
If you need a quick fix of how programming and computers work but don't understand the tech language, Greg Perry has some great books.
"Absolute Beginners Programming" is the best for this situation.
If you think you know it all and greg perry's books aren't that good-
Q.What language was used to make the first version of Windows?
If you do or don't know the language but still think you have all the answers, try
"Knuth's - The Art of computer Programming"
If you'd like a recommendation on programming books that I may have email me... Don't get let down and think that internet shopping can be a waste of money. I've already wasted enough of mine so get some help on the subject if you need it.
murray@mtc.biglobe.ne.jp
But don't waste my time either with obnoxious email...
