5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely good
It's very interesting to listen to this album and compare it with Cave-In's most recent release. Believe it or not, the now Radiohead-influenced, popular space rock outfit were once extremely hardcore. Sure, with each album, they grew more and more experimental, departing from their original sound, but this is where it all began. Crunchy guitars, visceral, screaming...

Fans of hardcore may appreciate the slightly-more-than-generic onslaught of pummeling power chords and poser vocals, everyone else should be thankful they evolved.

Crunchy guitars, visceral, screaming vocals, complex drum rhythms, and sort of a primitive prog-rock song structure makes Beyond Hypothermia one of the most solid metalcore albums ever made. Goes down in history as one of the best, next to Zao's Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest, and Converge's When Forever Comes Crashing. Be sure to check those out as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Cave In Greatest Hits Basically, February 28, 2003

This isn't the Cave In that most are familiar with. No, this is Cave In before they developed their unique "Space-Rock" sound that is turning heads and gaining the attention of Major Labels (Their Major Label Debut Antenna comes out March 18th on RCA Records), though this is still a great album. It's a fine mix of Failure meets Earth Crisis as you can discover for yourself throughout this collection of singles and 7 inches hits. Personal Favorites include the hardcore "Crossbearer", dark and complex "Ritual Famine" and the intriguing "Capsize". Fans of Earth Crisis, Archangel, Eighteen Visions, Bleeding Through, Hatebreed, Pantera, and Martyr AD will appreciate this hardcore full length!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stop Over Analzing, July 2, 2002
This review is from: Beyond Hypothermia (Audio CD)
Cave In is an amazing band. They are original and thought provoking. What I love most about them is that they arn't afraid to try new things. While Jupiter has a much more emo feel, this is the definate in-between CD of the three. But when you take it too far and over catagorize everything it becomes unappealing. As far as I'm concerned Cave In has no set catagory, they drift, they redefine, and in the prossess of making their music, they have created a genre all their own.

i stopped listening to metalcore, hardcore, etc, quite a while ago. i used to absolutely love this record (i still have a bunch of these 7"s) when i was in high school. i just decided to throw it onto my ipod cause i hadn't listened to it in years. holy mother of god is it still just as good as i remember. "crossbearer" is without a doubt one of the best metal songs ever written. plus, anyone that likes any type of music will like the opening of "flypaper."

if you're just finding out about bands like this i highly suggest you look into overcast's expectational dilution, an album that unfortunately seems to have become somewhat forgotten. which makes absolutely no sense now that both shadows fall and killswitch engage both are ex-members of overcast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, February 10, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Hypothermia (Audio CD)
This is metal the way it should be...complex and interesting with every song and minus double bass and cheesy breakdowns all the time. I usually listen to jazz but this caught my attention. Recommended even if you wouldn't normally listen to metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Cave-In of old, March 11, 2002
This review is from: Beyond Hypothermia (Audio CD)
I bought this CD due to everything I've heard about this band recently, and because of how awesome their new CD, Jupiter, is. I knew that their old stuff was heavyier and a lot more hardcore. That's cool, I can dig good hardcore. Bad hardcore sounds like nails being scrapped on a chalk board to me, but thankfully, this album sounds nothing like that. Cave-In is a very talented band, and this is a great hardcore album. It's certainly not for everyone, because I know some people can't stand being screamed at. But for the rest of us that love being screamed at, this is great. It's loud, complex, and very well played. There isn't really anything about the vocalists scream that sets him apart, althought he does it very well. His singing is what hooks me, he rarely sings on this record, and it isn't super clean when he does, but it's great. This is a band deffinatly worth checking out. I can't really say that this is their best CD, cause I haven't heard all of the others, but I can say that this is good enough that I now want to check out all of their work. An above average hardcore band, good stuff if it's what you like.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite cave in cd!, December 20, 2002
This review is from: Beyond Hypothermia (Audio CD)
first off don't listen to the guy that says that cave in is emo emo emo. there are little emo moments within this cd but this is far better than any "emo" disc out there. cave in are absolute genius', setting their own type of music i guess you can say, the best i can describe it as is space rock, but that is still way off from what cave in sounds like. they are never afraid to expand their sound. beyond hypothermia is by far cave in's heaviest stuff, and i love every single track on this cd. if you like converge you will love this cd!

This albums is pretty good but this album is crap compared to Jupiter! The best thing that ever happend to the band was their old singer leaving. Stephen Brodsky's creative aproach is far more interesting. Their best hard core songs are eaisly Juggernaut, Halo of Flies and Stoic. As for the guy who said they were emo, I saw them open for Converge last night and there was an emo girl next to me who hated them. Their most defnitly not Emo.
