4.0 out of 5 stars Kazumi Watanabe Proves His Compositional Skills Once Again!, December 8, 2003
By
Scott M. "Skeeter" (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beyond Infinite (Audio CD)
Many jazz artists have toyed with, or even composed using the Classical form. In this outing by Kazumi Watanabe, he creates something similar to some of Norwegian guitarist Terje Rpydal's work. One can't think of Gustav Holst's "The Planets" as a point of comparison, as most of the tracks are named after planets, and flow together as one piece of music, with different movements and themes. Like his previous recording, Watanabe uses a large ensemble featuring a string quartet, yet this recording is a polar opposite of "Dear Tokyo", which is much more a jazz record. Most of the record features excellent classical guitar work, but the tracks "Jupiter", "Saturn" and "Sun" really stand out for me as they have some really great electric guitar work. This record also features vocals on two tracks, which in some ways, feel like they don't belong, because the complexity of the agrrangments changes drastically during these tracks. None the less, they have their own part in the overall theme of the work and feature good vocal work by an artist (Nora) I'm unfamiliar with. Overall, Kazumi Watanabe fans should not be disappointed by this release.
