The epitome of the word "Old School"...,
By claus_byrial@hotmail.com (Denmark) - See all my reviews
This review is from: From Beyond (Audio CD)
"From Beyond" is the very definition of Old School Death Metal, and as such, it it virtually the benchmark against which all other "Old School" releases should be judged... Kam Lee's voice is still unmatched as far as depth goes... This is the remastered edition with the "Inhuman Condition" EP included.

Death Metal the way it should be!!,

Anything but 'generic' (Formed by Ex members of Death) Massacre pioneered the very sound of death metal to new levels unlike the earlier thrashy death metal sound (i.e. early Morbid Angel). From Beyond was both cornerstone and turning point and is responsible for the death metal sound of today. From the opening track there's a torrent of death metal ahead of it's time and that still sounds a valiant as ever today. As well as Kam Lee's phenomenal vocals there's Rick Rozz's guitar wizardry with wild solo's unlike I've ever heard before and Terry Butler and Bill Andrews supply a BRUTAL Bass & Drum rumble to power this monster of an album along. As already mentioned this edition comes with 1992's `Inhuman Condition' EP as a bonus, this bulks up the relatively short (as always with death metal) From Beyond album. This contains a cover of Venom's `Warhead' with Cronos doing vocals and Kam doing background growls, it's a good twisted track. Provoked Accursor is a definite highlight on this EP. The cover is also a different colour from the original for some reason. Their second album `Promise' released in 1996 had a slightly different (more metal) approach but was still a good but under-rated album. There's allot of anger I this album and I find it really comes into its own if you've suffered infidelity from the opposite sex. Massacre's albums are highly recommended!!!!

Classic death!,

Great old-school style death metal with catchy riffs and harsh vocals. The style occasionally reminds me Celitc Frost's earlier material. Sure, there are more extreme death and grind bands these days, but not many write songs as memorable as the ones found on this little gem. When you need a break from all of the overly technical stuff, throw in this disc for some death metal that delivers the stuff that made the old-school great!

this band comes from the center of many death metal bands with ex members of death and obituary.early in their career allen west was a member and this cd has 2 original death members and 2 leprosy/spiritual healing members.this is a cd to live in infamy as a brutally heavy strait forward jugaurnte.with one guitarist rick rozz(not the best but this style is hes calling) it sounds like a panzers tank rolling into battle and with the team of andrews/butler holding the rythm down it's blitzkrieg to your senses ans kam lees sub bass vox. to destacribe this in one work HEAVY!. this cd takes their work in death a slightly different direction and pushes it to the limit of mezmorizing rythmical death metal, pure and simple!they crush!!

All of the guys in this band joined Death at some point, except for Kam Lee, the singer. He was actually the singer in Mantas with "Evil" Chuck Schulinder on guitar. He would eventually split and form the death metal originators Death. Anyone out there know how to get ahold of any Mantas cd's? Any how pick this album up. I paid 29.98 for it and got free shipping I would have paid 40. Yeah it's that good. ChefGore

while chuck owns DEATH and is working on the masterpiece human these ex-DEATH MAMBERS give chuck a taste of revenge.Kam Lee formerly of death/mantis,Rock Rozz guitarist from leprosy cd and bill andrews and terry butler both from leprosy and spiritual healing cds band together to create massacre not the most technically advanced or musaially divers band around but they had the brutallity that would open a couple of door and poeple eyes to what chuck my have given up for personal differences.they had learned every lesson tought to chuck and helped his rise to furture legendary status and created a truly brual sound and the thickist guitar tone(like trevor peres obituary). instead of pushing the limit like chuck they did what they knew best simply brutal groove and duoble bass thuder and super death vocal style who could scream like no other.

Like Death's "Leprosy"? Here is most of that line up. Great Floridian death metal!,

While Chuck Schuldiner was notorious for ditching his old musicians in search for new talent and new band mates, his former band mates would go on to try on form other groups. Massacre is one of those groups. The brand of death metal featured on "From Beyond" is pretty standard Floridian death metal. Scott Burns sits in the production seat at Morrisound studios in Tampa and its off. While this album may not have garnered the popularity like other releases at this time, it is still a great album. The consistent pummeling drumming of Bill Andrews and the wild soloing of Rick Rozz are a treat in themselves. If you couldn't get enough of Death "Leprosy" and wanted a second helping (minus Chuck) here it is! One feature that is pretty cool (especially for the time) is the double tracked vocals of Kam Lee. On the CD insert it proudly states, "There are no vocal effects on this album". One might wonder why they would put that on the insert...until you listen to how brutal these vocals are. The double tracking goes in betweeen a Barney Greenway-esque grunt to high pitched screams (Mercyful Fate-esque). The tracks are often layed over each other so sometimes the scream will come in while the grunt is still going. Wild solos backed against heavy riffs, varied tempos, insane vocals, good drumming, pretty long songs...what more could you ask for in a first generation death metal group? Highly recommended to anyone who is a completist when it comes to death metal. Or to someone who really liked "Leprosy".

Classic Death Metal Release,
By
This review is from: From Beyond (Audio CD)
This was the best death metal album of 1991 in my opinion. While Death's "Human" received more positive press, Massacre's "From Beyond" was far and beyond a better release. Terry Butler (bass) and Bill Andrews (drums) helped reform Massacre after leaving Death in 1990. Ironically, former Death members Rick Rozz (guitars) and Kam Lee (vocals) also were in Massacre. All eight songs are solid and the group seemed to work well together immediately. A 5 star death metal release.

these ex-member of death were enough to shock even Chuch form death they reached a level depth only touched on during leprosy.so much the same but so different massacre gets my vote for heavy brutal sound but death progessed well to just different.this cd is a must have by any death metal fan. the vox are deep, guitars thick, and bass & drums are like they are machine driven clock work.brutally heavy band don't walk RUN and try to find this cd!! I know they release 2 more cds, there could be more?If you buy the right release of this you'll get their second cd/ep on the cd.
