Book Description

October 1, 2002
BEYOND MEDICINE is the first major book about ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) written for patients, families and medical professionals with input from patients themselves.

ARDS effects over 150,000 individuals annually with a mortality rate of 30-50% or higher. ARDS Patients and their families will find information and consolation in the stories of other patients with similar problems. Physicians, nurses and other medical professionals will get a patient-family perspective that they may have missed by focusing on the disease rather than on the person with the disease.

BEYOND MEDICINE comes in an era of "Evidence-based Medicine" and protocol- based patient care. This engaging book reminds us to remember and use the healing forces of Love & Prayer, Touch & Humor, Music & Pets. Each of these elements of healing can be helpful in critical illnesses such as ARDS, as illustrated by the stories in this book. Chapters on each element go into depth on that topic.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I highly recommend Dr. Yarnall's gripping story to you. Journey to the edge of life with Steve and then return to a fuller life with him. You will find the trip to be an exciting ride you will never forget. --Lester R. Sauvage, M.D. , Cardiovascular Surgeon Founder, The Hope Heart Institute, Author of "The Open Heart"

Not only are you trying to teach the world about Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome - (which I had not heard of prior to reading your book), but you are presenting a theory of consciousness which far transcends ARDS. --Maralyn Chase, State Representative 32nd Legislative District, State of Washington

At a time when medical technology seems to be the answer in life threatening illnesses, you bring us back to the realization that it is not just high-tech, but also family and community support … You have touched something vital in the American way of thinking …whatever it is, it's beyond medicine. --Noel Tiano, PhD., Former Chaplain at Washoe Medical Center

About the Author

After Dr. Yarnall's miraculous recovery from ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), he felt the need to increase awareness of this disease which may be much more common than generally recognized, and which can strike anyone at any age and at any stage of health.

Dr. Yarnall includes his own story and selected stories of others with ARDS to give a personal face to this devastating illness. Each ARDS story is fascinating and together they present a message of hope even when physicians have pronounced the prognosis as "hopeless".

5.0 out of 5 stars A doctor who admits that 'medicine' didn't 'heal' him when he suffered from ARDS, February 11, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Medicine (Paperback)
but that it kept him alive long enough for Prayer, Touch, Humor, Pets and Music to do the job is a brave man!

There is so much more to the psyche of human healing than comes in pill!

Steve's story was incredible, but this book has several other people's stories too. All of whose stories are amazing!

I highly recommend this book, especially if you or someone you know is suffering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review comments I collected for ARDS resource book: Beyond Medicine, June 9, 2010
This review is from: Beyond Medicine (Paperback)
From the perspective of patients and family members, Dr. Yarnall reveals the sources of strength that ordinary people can draw upon when faced with a catastrophic illness.
John Hansen-Flaschen, M.D. Professor of Medicine& Chief of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Division University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

This book is a magnificent revelation about a little-known disease - ARDS. The stories of sheer courage of ARDS patients makes it difficult to put this book down once started. This book is a "must read" for everyone.
Alexander Rayshich, 77 year old retired Engineer

This book is so good that I'm sending a copy to each of our Board Members.
Jeannette Dunn, Director Foundation for Care Management

This is a wonderful, helpful book for the critically ill patient, family and friends. Healthy readers can see what the patient is REALLY going through. I know since I was a 42-year old ARDS patient following surgery for a stomach ulcer in April, 2000.
Nancy Lackemacher Retired Budget Analyst Sacramento, California

5.0 out of 5 stars the miracle of cure, March 15, 2010
This review is from: Beyond Medicine (Paperback)
The surgical knife and pills are not the only sources of curing the ailing body. There are cures we can't explain and their influences are sometimes far more powerful than all the armaments available at the hands of physicians. Sometimes we label them as miracles. In perhaps more instances than we think it is these other influences that give surgery and medicines their successes. Faith, love, support of others, music, beauty, and many other factors have powerful influences on the way our bodies react to illnesses and their cures. This book is especially necessary to anyone who has given up hope and to their families and loved ones who are despairing.
