By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Integration (Spiral-bound)
This book provides both the novice and seasoned teacher with a great deal of engaging and innovative teaching strategies. It is a handbook that all teachers in all domains can use to increase concept attainment. The sample lessons are easily modified to meet the needs of all learners. Beyond Monet would be a wise investment for any teacher.

This book is a *must have* for any teacher interested in using cooperative learning techniques effectively. It explains the concepts behind effective group work and how to structure groups using Johnson's five elements of cooperative learning. The book covers the use of graphic organisers which can be used in classrooms from pre-primary to year twelve and much, much more....

3.0 out of 5 stars not really for novices?, December 31, 2010
This review is from: Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Integration (Spiral-bound)
This was my textbook for a 1 year teacher training program, that I'd entered with a BA but no previous education courses. I found this book very hard to "get into" and to follow, as it assumed a lot of knowledge of industry-specific terms. After gaining more experience in the education field (with what was taught in the course and gained from classroom and workshop experience) it started to make more sense. However, it tries to combine quite a variety of ideas from vague concepts to specific hands-on methods used in specific situations, so it's overwhelming for a beginner, I find.

It is also trying to indelibly impress the fact that teaching isn't just a "formula", but spends too much time and energy explaining everything in the context of the art vs. science / "artful science" metaphor. I feel I could draw my own understanding of the (relatively simple) "artful science" concept without all of the author's poetic endeavors.

It's also quite large and heavy, so while the coil binding allows you to open it to any page (with the cover folded against itself), the pages will tear if you move the book around too much in that position.
