About the Author

Krishna Pendyala is a nontraditional life coach and speaker. He is also a former high-tech entrepreneur who set out years ago to write a book about achieving “success on your own terms,” but then changed course as he realized that true success and happiness depend on knowing who “you” really are. This led to Beyond the PIG and the APE, which invites each person to live as “the big YOU” — fully aware and joyfully alive. Born and raised in India, Krishna moved to the United States in 1984 for graduate studies. He stayed on to launch two multimedia companies and developed MediaSite, the industry-leading product for online lectures and webcasting. During the 1990s he began speaking and leading seminars on personal growth and effectiveness. Starting with corporate audiences, he has branched into working with people in all walks of life. Krishna’s current position merges his passions for business and life coaching: he is the Chief Operating Officer and Coach at Waldron Wealth Management, a private financial advisory firm. Krishna Pendyala holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and a master’s in educational foundations and media technology from Indiana State University. He has attended executive management programs at Carnegie Mellon University and Harvard, and constantly hones his coaching skills through a mix of professional courses and personal study. He is a Charter Member of TiE, the world’s largest entrepreneurial network, and has been active in many civic and charitable efforts in Pittsburgh, where he now lives with his wife and two children. He is the organizer of Pittsburgh NOW, a learning community devoted to attaining peace through presence; and the founder of Discover YOU, a group focused on raising inner levels of awareness. Beyond the PIG and the APE: Realizing Success and True Happiness, written by Krishna Pendyala, is an interesting, easy to read self-help book that teachers could easily use for in Psychology classrooms.

As a young man he attempted suicide. Over the years he pulled himself from under those black clouds of apathy to the happy and successful author and business man that he is today. In this book Krishna shares true stories and his journeys attempting to help others avoid his pitfalls.

Pendyala constructs a paradigm to explain difference levels of awareness and thought process that run our thoughts and lives, and impact upon our happiness.

The APE is the animal inside of us that Avoids Painful Experiences. The PIG is the animal in us that Pursues Instant Gratification. These two minions work on the lowest level of thought and we are not conscious of them.

The EGO is our conceited, prideful thoughts of self-importance. On the next level of awareness we may use logic as opposed to instinct to make decisions; however, logic runs the risk of being based on a false premise.

When the EGO uses the PIG-APE to justify the means, there is seldom a good outcome.

When we are truly present understanding our internal thoughts and consequences of our behavior we delay the judgments and evaluations long enough to make better decisions on how we should react to people, things and events. This directly impacts our sense of peace, joy, contentment and inner accomplishment.

The author provides numerous examples and stories that explain and reinforce his construct. I enjoyed this book and believe that people interested in improving their mental health or understanding individual human behavior will find it fascinating.

Enjoy!

Krishna and I met on a flight from Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale. Our first conversation was about the (then) recent death of his father. And I was struck by the nature of this man, talking so genuinely, so openly, with a person he just met. That feeling reemerged when I read the first few pages of this book, when Krishna describes his final suicide attempt. You know right away that this is a man who has felt real pain. As the book progresses, you quickly realize that he is also a man who speaks from a place of clarity. In this book I find traces of our conversations we had, always in the same context as we had discussed them. As a conflict resolution professional, I consider the characteristic of transparency is a rare gem, and found it the binding thread of this work. This book is a conversation that you need to be have with yourself, and like any difficult conversation, it takes you far from your comfort zone.

Krishna does not present you with a neat little 12-step model to explain life. Instead, he invites you to consider your behaviors and motivations through the lens of your ego. If you truly reflect, what you find may be painful. But not to worry-Krishna stays with you the entire way, sharing his own painful (but ultimately helpful) insights. His writing is soundly rooted in nonviolent communication and conflict resolution. He succeeds, where academics often fail, in describing how daily life will feel and as your thought process will shift. You will learn to speak as your natural self, from a place of security and comfort, rather than from our typical place of suspicion and fear. Pig and Ape is relevant to every aspect of your life. For your family, for your prosperity, for your sanity; to sleep more soundly, to breathe more easily, read this book. Your life will be better for it. The path may be trying, but you share it with a great source of comfort-that of true friend.

I found Krishna's book very enlightening! I especially liked the part about how the ego can even make spiritual seeking an ego-based goal. That's something that many of us seekers tend to forget along the way, as we strive for spiritual perfection. It's not perfection you should be seeking, but to be simply aware of your true self, the "big you" behind the "small you." I also liked how he made abstract concepts seem practical. It's almost like a down to earth handy how-to guide for fans of Eckhart Tolle's more abstract spiritual concepts. I definitely recommend it!

I like this book a lot. Identifying the PIG and the APE helps me understand why I do what I do sometimes. Simply put, I like seeing why I chase & avoid things. This has been enlightening & helpful.

My mother-in-law doesn't have an Amazon account, so I am submitting this on her behalf.

"In thinking about writing this review, my goal was to word it so as to sound intelligent and well versed. But wait - that would be, according to the author, the work of my 'ego'. So I will simply say, I've found a new and interesting way to look at living life. At the age of 71 - how good is that? Thank you Mr. Pendyala" - Betty Carter

I'm happy to write this review on Beyond the PIG and the APE: Realzing SUCCESS and true HAPPINESS.

I have been a student of self help books since I was 16 starting with Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maltz. I have been meditating for almost 40 years, and even walked on burning coals through Tony Robbins program. I have worked with some of the best strategic coaches in the world in pursuit of professional and personal excellence.

Still,I found Krishna Pendyala's first book to be remarkable. I began reading the book shortly before hurricane Sandy hit our home. Without electricity and many other distractions, I could not put down his book. Reading it on my iPad, with little battery life in front of my fireplace and flashlight, the words immediately created a strong connection. I kept saying to myself, oh my god, this is why I'm so afraid of this- it's the APE in me, or this is why I'm so aggressive with this, it's the PIG. None of this is really who I am, who who I want to be.

Since I read the book, I made important changes in my personal and business life which have brought success and increasing joy.

I have never taken the time to write a review. I'm excited to share my experience with other readers. Please, do read this gem. It may be the best investment you have ever made. To Krishna Pendyala- I look forward to reading your next book. Don't keep me waiting too long.

Jaimie Blackman, NYC.
