From Library Journal
At last a book for the advanced canoeist! While there is material readily available on downstream canoeing, books covering the skills required to travel upstream against the current are few and far between. The author, a north woods guide and experienced canoeist, explains the art of poling and lining a canoe upstream, portaging between waters, and traveling through ice during periods of "freeze-up" in the fall, and "ice-out" in the spring. While of little interest to beginners, this will nonetheless appeal to those readers of the books of Calvin Rutstrum ( North American Canoe Country , Macmillan, 1964), Bill Mason ( Path of the Paddle , Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1980), et al. Highly recommended for large canoeing collections, particularly those in northern states.
