4.0 out of 5 stars If you are learning to play guitar, you definitely want this book, November 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Beyond Power Chords (Paperback)
The content of this book is 5 stars all the way. I only dinged it a star because as I have opened the book about 100 times, pages are beginning to fall out. And I am generally pretty careful with books. So that's unfortunate, but only barely detracts from my appreciation of this book. The content is solid gold.

If you can play a few of the basic chords (C, A, G, E, D) and only add a few more here or there when you have to, this book will help you move beyond that. If you cannot play those basic chords yet, you might want another basic book first because this book picks up from there.

This book is not only teaching me how to play the guitar, at the same time, I am learning how to make music. Yeah, I am learning how to physically form the chords, but I am also learning how the chords in a scale relate to each other and sound good as you progress through different chord progressions. This is all explained VERY well in this book if you have no idea what I am talking about here.

If you know a beginning guitarist who can play a little bit already, this would make an excellent gift. I have a bunch of guitar books, and this is my favorite. I think the material in this book, if truly mastered, will take me about a year to learn. But I am playing songs from the first lesson, so I don't have to wait to make music.

If you don't already play all of the barre chords and you only buy one guitar book this year, it should be this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hey you, can you add some chords to my lyrics?, April 23, 2009

This review is from: Beyond Power Chords (Paperback)
With this book, the answer will be: YES, I can.

The format of this book is as follows:
first, gives the scale formula of the chord progression, e.g. I-IV-V7-I, I-V7-I-biii-II, I-VI-II-V, plus many many more. Includes both open and barre chords
second, list several rock songs that used the progression-
Then, give a musical example of the progression. Lastly, it moves on to the next example.

It appears that this book was also written for the song writer too. It contains so many good ideas that will surely inspire you. Just add lyrics and you will be on your way to creating many great sounding songs with these progressions.

This book lacks fancy rhythm techniques such as finger picking, chord melody, single string funk, etc. However, it wasn't written for that purpose, neither. Instead, this book was created for those rockers who wants to branch out from power chording every song that they create. It is ok, after all, to chord-style songs like-uh Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Rolling Stone, and even Prince-the prince of funk...

Chord diagrams and TAB are presented in this book. This book is about learning chords and most important, using them...
